I am looking for some wisdom/experience from the group on attaching a flagpole to my 2015 RT for Patriot Guard events/escorts. Any good guidance on how to do that?

Thanks in advance!

I for one appreciate you service for our fallen Veterans. :bow

My brother has done a few of the escort rides on his Honda.

The full size flag with pole seems to need at least support for 2' of the mast....What is best for your bike, I'm not sure.

The Patriot Guard mission is to stand guard at funerals of America's Fallen Heroes who are killed in action or are casualties of the current wars on terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq, or any war zone. We also offer this support to law enforcement and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty. We shield them from protesters, showing our deepest respect and honoring the Fallen Heroes, their families, and their communities. We are invited guests of the family.
You do not need to ride a motorcycle or be a Military Veteran to support the Patriot Guard Mission.

Crabbing about how someone supports this boggles my mind.

Thanks again pkpilot.

Hope you are able to get the flag attached so you can fly it proudly. Thank you for the service you provide to the grieving loved ones of those who have given their lives in service to the rest of us.

Jay's suggestion of using rear crash bars is what I've seen used most often. I have jerry-rigged a pole to my R1150RT but if you plan on doing it more than once, the crash bar route is the way to go.

Ilium and other will work fine. After installing the bars, measure their diameter (1" IIRC) and find the appropriate brackets for mounting on a perpendicular (to the flag pole orientation) bar.

As for those that don't think a BMW should be used for such duty, I suppose they also think a Harley should only do Police bike duty, etc. BMWs around the world likely carry more flags in the line of doing official and community work than any other make and they do look good performing such a valuable and honourable service.

.

And the Ilium bars look easy to remove if he does not want them mounted all the time.

Unfortunately the Illium bar is a 1" diameter, and the readily available flag pole attachments are for 1/2". Maybe a marine parts place would have something that would work the same way.

Are you saying you can only attach to something with a 1/2" dia?

No. I looked at the brackets at J&P. They only accommodate 1/2" tubing like you see on a rear luggage rack. I really liked the Illium idea. I was considering adding those to my bike, so it would have been an elegant solution. When I get out of the hospital I will check out some marine supply places. They might have clamps that will work.

A quick look at "adjustable marine flag mounts" (search) will yield some good result.

It's a common mount also used on buildings. The marine version is usually stainless. A couple of U-Bolts and you would most likely good to go.
