Thread: Side Panel Removal

    Side Panel Removal

OK, I feel weird even asking but can't find anything detailed information out there. I have a new R1150RT and while I am quite proficient in the garage, I am also one to ask first, before just tackling something. I need to take the glove box side fairing off (I am removing the radio box and running wires for my Autocom and Garmin GPS). It's my first BMW and I don't want to break any tabs or do anything stupid. Are there detailed instructions? I noticed one bolt just under the mirror, does the dash need to be loosened, windshield removed, etc.? Is there any recommended pattern of bolt removal to avoid undo pressure or flexing? Or is it as simple as going around and remove all the hex bolts that are visible? Again, sorry for the dumb question, just wanted to ask the experts.
    Thank you in advance!

I can scan my owner's manual sheet if you want, but there are lots them to take out. I don't remember if it is sixteen or nineteen. The way I usually do it is I take off the saddle. I start with that one and then work toward the front of the bike. I take off the mirror - that is scary the first time you do it - take that one off. Then the one under the headlight by the oil cooler. Then down the front of the RT, I don't believe that there are any there. Then at the base of the engine. The ones right under the "jug" and continue back to the gear shift.

There is a tongue on the plastic that places it under the dash section. That is the one tricky part.

Also when putting the screws back in, do NOT put the longer screws into the gas tank section. (It says so in the manual, so it must be true )

If you want me to scan the page, let me know I would be more than happy to.
