Engine guard chaps

I'm going on a trip across states in July. I ran across chaps for my Kawa 1600 nomad. Has anyone used the engine chaps or find them beneficial on long trips? Or, do they just create a wind resistance?

I ran H-D RoadKings for 7 years as a Motor Officer. Used 'chaps' attached to the engine guards sparingly in cold weather.

If your trip is in July, not sure what benefit you'd get. 'Plus' would be blocking road spray in wet weather; 'Minus' would be less airflow over that big twin.
