battery gassing

Go Leafs Go
When I tried to start my 92 R100RS ... air temp was cold so thick oil maybe, but as it cranked the battery released water through the vent tube ...not overfilled with water, so what causes that ? Thanks.

Possibly due to a high current draw while starting because of the higher load placed on the starter as a result of the low temperatures.
