    Adirondacks Recommendations?

Doing a long weekend with a couple friends and as the person in charge of planning the get away I was thinking that the Adirondacks would be a nice ride. Starting in Maryland. Day one should put us on the south side. Days 2 and three enjoying the area. Day 4 is the return home.

Wanting to keep it on the cheap we will be camping and the only other requirement we all have is a cold beer by a campfire at the end of the day.

Looking for recommended roads, campgrounds, meal stops and seeing as the area appears sparse from google maps... will we be able to get a beer close to the campgrounds or shall we plan ahead? :

The KOA in Wilmington, near Whiteface Mountain is one possibility. Ride into Lake Placid for places to eat, or find more modest fare near the campground. You can ride up to the top of Whiteface by road, from Wilmington, or take the gondola lift to the top of Little Whiteface at the ski area. There's gotta be beer around there somewhere.

Last weekend I stayed at the Cooperstown KOA, just south of the Adirondacks. Very clean, very quiet. Tent spaces a bit away from the RVs. Distance from DC is about right for a day's ride, and ~1 1/2 hrs from Lake George.

Roads? Unless you want dirt, there is a limited number of roads in the park itself, a few more choices for small roads to the east.

One word of advice, don't be in a hurry. There will be traffic, and because of the limited number of roads, that is where the LEO drive too, and they are not real tolerant of speeding, that combined with a lot of 35 and 45 mph limits in places, makes it very easy to leave with a ticket.

We spent a weekend at Moffit Beach State Park this past September, near Speculator, NY. The Park Rangers were very occomodating with making sure we had a site that worked for parking the bikes. The upper shower house is new, great design and private. The little town of Speculator has a diner and grocery store.
