A friend was rebuilding one of those when I was in high school. It had a very interesting cam drive, using two "dog bone" connecting rods.
I don't remember it running, but while it was apart, it was fun to spin the engine and watch the cam rotate. Guess we were pre-computer geeks...
NSU was quite innovative. As I understand it, in the post war era, Curtiss-Wright was allocated chunks of NSU Intellectual Property. They picked and chose what they were interested, but never made a success of any of the intellectual booty. They (C-W) saw a future for the Wankel engine in lawn mowers, but not cars.......
