Road Tar??

Yesterday got into road construction and the dreaded "Fresh Oil" area with no way out. It appeared the oil was not to fresh but upon getting home I notice both tires had a build up of tar/oil with small stones sticking to them. Sooo now what does anyone have a good method for removing the stuff from the tires or do I just ride and try to wear the stuff off and hope one of the stone don't work their way into the tires and cause a flat? I hate road construction!!

If any is on the motorcycle (not the tires), I use WD-40 which I finally found a use for.

Like this, I use WD40 from a gallon can. Moisten a rag (using gloves) and lightly rub the oil and tar bumps off the painted finish. You don't want to rub hard as it will scratch the finish. Let the WD soften and melt the tar away. After it is removed I give the bike a good wash with car wash soap. This will remove the residue left by the process. I had a real mess of tar and oil on my bike after returning from Billings. The wheels and paralever arm required several applications of WD before the spots and bumps were removed. It now looks like new, smooth to the touch.:)

Hot soapy water with an abrasive scrubby to get off the worst build-up, then ride it.

I did the same and had tar all over my tires several months ago. I used a plastic bondo/putty knife and washed it real good...then I just rode the rest of it off. I'm a bit skeptical about using WD40 on the tires...

Clearly, WD40 on the tires isn't a great idea. For the tires just riding on them has cleared the tar in a few miles.

My favorite is a home made solution of Kerosene, Dawn dish soap and water mixed in a spray bottle

I guess I am real glad my GSA has black rims, black frame and misses most of the tar it seems:scratch.
