Stupid centerstand issues!

It won't stay in the up position! The old spring seemed a little weak, so i got a new one. Didn't hold the centerstand in the up position. Tried "flipping" the hook over and that didn't do anything. I took the stand off and am looking at the spacer/bolts. A little worn, not too bad, but I would think that some wear would actually help. (but i've been horribly wrong before).

This is a standard/stock centerstand/spring on a '71 R75/5 SWB.

There is also a "pin" on the centerstand right side and a "hook" at the front engine mount. They are not being used. I can't recall them ever being used on any bike I have seen. Why are they there and is the remedy simply to instll another spring there?

One spring, in the hole on the "hook" at the frame, and one loop around the peg on the side of the stand. I can't imagine why that won't keep the stand up. People usually complain vociferously when the same thing snaps up!!

That "hook" is what you can rotate in order to change it from staying up to staying down. Currently does your stand stay down?
 
That's what makes this issue so irritating. I have tried the spring in a "hook up" and "hook down" position. The old spring would just barely hold the stand up. I may try and reinstall the old spring.

Why is there a spring mounting pin and loop on the right side with no spring shown in the diagram?

The diagram in the link posted by Kurt, indicates that you need two springs (#7) for the centerstand. Item #14 is for the side stand. How many springs are you using? If you're using only one spring, then that could be the problem.

My r75/6 has two springs, one on each side. I think that was how it was originally supplied. Gives you a spare if one were to break at the very least. Mine will stay up with one spring though. Maybe your spring is to long or is stretched. Good luck.
 
I have installed a Brown sidestand, so don't need the sidestand spring. I only had one centerstand spring before and only have one on my other /5, so since there is only one centerstand spring shown in the diagram, assumed that was all that were needed.

I will try 2 springs, one on each side. Results to follow. Thanks!
 
OK this really IS a stupid issue. I have used 2 (TWO like in the manual) new centerstand springs. The front hook is the end with the coils. It goes in the front "inside out". Which seems to be the easiest way, then the long tail end hook goes under the centerstand pins. On both sides.

The stand is officially UP! Now for a test ride!

I got caught in a trap of believing my other /5 was "correct" AND not reading the manual.

test ride did not go well. less than a block and centerstand dropped. I will "flip" the springs and see if that works.

The springs must affect the brake light because now it dosen't work.

Here's a pic of my spring looking up from the bottom. The long leg is to the rear of the bike. Hope it helps. My stand stays up fine. Cheers.

Maybe your problem isn't springs... maybe you have a ghost. It is almost Halloween. :wow If the bike starts making eery sounds next, we'll know for sure. :laugh
 
You do have the correct springs and center stand?? Max BMW shows the springs are about 6" long.
 
I flipped both springs so the back hook is "over the top" of the centerstand spring. The stand stays up when parked, but it is raining and I don't want to test ride now.

Brake light issue is not related to the spring, however! When I move the rubber cap at the front brake light switch, the lights work or not depending on the placement of the cap.

The springs are the correct ones.

More testing to follow!
