Welcome to the forum, Bruce!!

Just curious...is there are real need to lock the gas cap? I can't remember when I've done it on my /7.

That said, see what Snowbum has to say:

Ditto.

I can't remember when I locked the gas cap last. Besides, I have heard horror stories where the cap (acting like in locking position) just "spun" but would not unscrew the threaded portion. Guys had to have removed by destroying the cap.

I just leave mine so that it is never locked and have had not problems!

When I finally traded in my /6 with close to 200K on it, it was dressed out with an Avon fairing, /7 seat and /7 tank.......All in black and was totally a the best BMW I ever had..........BUT.......just had to have that deep blue RT with the flip out lights that acted as laser cannons for moving traffic over from the fast lane..........WORST BMW I ever had........anyway..........

I had that durn locking gas cap with the /7 tank. Once, down in Mexico I couldn't get it open until I did the put a crowbar through the handle and pull up as one rotated trick..........NEVER again even cinched that puppy down tight...........

So, traded it in and one day sittin around the house I get a call from my dealer. Seems they had sold the thing and the new person had locked it..........Was in the middle of no where and wondered how to get the thing open so he could get fuel..........The parts guy and I laughed for a couple of years over that when we saw each other. The guy had bored a hole in the cap and used a funnel to fill the tank..........Never can figure out what folks will do.........God bless......Dennis
