I started on bikes in high school with a 250 enduro and moved up to the infamous Kawasaki H2 in college. That bike gave up the ghost on a below zero winter day in Nebraska. Life goes on and other things take over, like marriage. My wife was an Organ Transplant Coordinator and she couldn't bear the thought of seeing me on a professional basis. Sadly, I am now a widower and the door opened for the two-wheeled experience again.
The BMW car club I belong to takes fantastic Spring and Fall tours here in Wisconsin. I thought man, these roads are made for bikes. That, coupled with seeing the Long Way Round and Long Way Down videos, and my friend's egging me on, I took the MSF rider's course and got my license.
I bought a F700GS last Oct. and loved it. This Spring I knew I wanted more so the 700 was replaced with a 2014 R1200GS. It's fantastic. The car has become a very pretty grocery getter. The bike has become my commuter and main form of recreation whenever there are a few hours to spare, rain or shine. My friend and I are pointing toward a ride in the Alps next year.
I'm going to the two day off road course this Oct. If anyone else is going it would be great to meet up and swap stories.
