RT windshield

I've got a 1988 r100rt and I'm trying to change out the windshield. Mounting brackets seemed to come apart OK over the winter but I've found the used aftermarket windshield I bought on Ebay isn't a fit. Must be for a twin shock bike....Anyway, in trying to re-install the stock windshield I'm finding that it's a royal PIA to get the base brackets (height adjusters) mounted back in place, the resistance of flexing the windshield makes it too hard to get the mounting bolt aligned and threaded into the fairing hole....of course this is while working behind the the dash and under the fairing...

Sequence I'm trying is the reverse of removal: secure the mounting tabs to corners of the shield, place the windshield in position, then put in one mounting plate bolt...that's easy, but when trying to hold the bracket in place to get the second bolt in, it just won't align, there's too much resistance from the flexing of the windshield...anyone else have this trouble? Am i doing something wrong?? Any tips or workaround? Thanks for any help!
