Rollin' by The Great River Road to the MOA Rally.

Concept:
Riders joining a tour of the Great River Road near the mouth of the Mississippi River in route to the MOA Rally in St Paul MN.

So, join for the entire ride or just a few days, join at any point or just join other riders during one of the lunches or dinner locations. We explore the offerings of the Great River Road such as Ferry crossings, National Park locations, local history, Mississippi Blue Trails markers, great places to taste the great food selections and the rich history of the mighty Mississippi River.

More information to follow...we are working with the rally chairs to provide support for this ride to the rally.

Thanks for posting, Don....It's going to be a great "rolling ride" to the rally ;) Get out your maps, and start planning.

Ferry crossings on the Great River Road

The Great River Road offers many Ferry crossings... as with all Crossing check prior to your departure if said ferry is open and operational... prepare for another route to cross the River... Crossings whether by Ferry or Bridges are limited in number.

We need some hosts to help coordinate this event along the river. It is not hard and we'll help you! If you live in or near any of the areas listed above and would like to help riders headed up the river (not up the creek...up the river!), let Norwood know at the email listed above!

Questions??? Let us know! This will be a great opportunity to meet some new riders and have blast riding to the rally!

Vance, I live in Marion, Ar., just across the river from Memphis, Tn.; both cities being on the Great River Road. I would be willing to advise anyone on riding either side of the river in this area heading north to the National. Old Man River plays a big part in the history and geography of this area. The greatest American maritime tragedy/atrocity with loss of life happened just out side of Marion on the Miss. River. The sinking of the SS Sultana with the loss of over 1700 lives in 1865 is a almost totally unknown disaster in American history.

Great plan.I was just looking at that route for my ride up.Don't forget the motorcycle museum at Anamosa,Iowa when you get to the area.Well worth the short side trip.Ed

If I were specifically running the Great River Road, I would ride to the southern end on Highway 23 to Triumph or Venice. Neat experience,as the road runs between two large levees all the way down to the end. Those folks that live there live a unique lifestyle. I'm a Civil War buff, so a stop at Fort Jackson would be a must. Don't miss this part of the Great River Road.

Sultana monument, Marion Ar.

The SS Sultana monument is behind City Hall off Highway 77 at the intersection of Military Rd. The old Crittenden County jail is still standing and predates the the Civil War. Building and marker just east of the County court house 1/2 block on E. Court.

River Road GPS Routes

I'm riding from north of Atlanta and will get on the river road south of St. Louis or so. Can someone post some GPS routes to keep me on the river road. What I can find on line is too general and doesn't give me clear road numbers. Google maps use the name "great river rd." on and off. I'm using garmin basecamp to route and it doesn't list the road by name but in a couple places. Thanks

links to good maps would help too.

Check these sites out: http://www.roadtripusa.com/routes/greatriver/greatriver.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Routing_of_the_Great_River_Road#Minnesota_.28NSB.29

Also, the roads that make up the Great River Road are marked by signs with a ship's helm wheel logo throughout its length on both sides of the river.

Look at these GPX files... they are choices from South of St. Louis to Ft. Madison or Hannibal area. The River Road runs really on both sides of the river and so marked...Hwy 61 in most areas... I found the times I ran the ride that I would cross the river at given points either bridges or ferry options to enhance the ride. There are many historic or national park/memorials POIs as well...

These routes are choices either East or West of St. Louis...
Hope this helps.
