I've been waiting for this since October 22. The fault, when it occurs, usually causes it to go into limp-home mode, although sometimes it goes into drop-dead mode. Mine quit 3 times in 5 miles and I had to reboot the bike (key off/key on) each time. I saw the recall notice at the dealer and it was dated November 2013, no date given. Apparently it became available Thanksgiving week, and it got applied to my bike today. I pick it up Friday, woohoo!

This recall only affects early 2012 bikes, those manufactured between 1/2011 and 3/2012 IIRC.

Fun fact: software updates get logged by the bike, when the log fills up, no more software updates are possible. My log was filled up, so they had to replace the audio controller because that's apparently where the log is kept. I don't know how many entries the log can handle.

    WASHINGTON D.C.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)?s notice says in certain riding conditions, an incorrect throttle valve control signal may be received by the engine control unit, limiting the engine speed. That can cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

?A calibration threshold within the throttle valve control software has been determined to be overly sensitive. As a result, under certain operating conditions, an implausible signal may be registered within the engine control unit. If this happens, the engine control unit may initiate a ?fail safe mode? (i.e. ?limp home mode,? engine speed limited to approximately 2,000 rpm). In rare cases, the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a crash,? according to the NHTSA notice.

BMW said it is not aware of any accidents and of only one minor injury having resulted from the issue.

BMW will notify owners. Dealers are asked to update the throttle control software, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin this month.
