How Was Your Summer?

Ummm..

Morton's Spring Fling at Covered Bridge and a bit of touring around West Virginia - about 1,000 miles (I take the long way..)

BMW-RA rally at the Biltmore, Asheville, and a bit of touring around West Virginia - about 1,200 miles (I took an even longer way..)

Just back (5PM today) from a 3,200 mile Seafood Chowder Run to/around/back - Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Cabot Trail, New Brunswick. Love the Maritime provinces of Canada. Did the Cabot Trail counter-clockwise this time, last time was clockwise. I think I'll have to do it again to decide which direction I really like.

Plus another 8,000 or so of just around riding, some local events and rallies. I tried to avoid using 4 wheels whenever possible last winter/this spring/summer and into the fall..

Still loving the R1200R (75,000 miles and it always brings me home..)

I doubt I've put a single mile on a motorcycle this summer, and maybe only 100 this spring.

It's because I've recently moved to Oklahoma. Not only are the roads flat and straight as far as the eye can see (before the earth starts to curve away), but they're pot-holed, rough, and beat to hell. If the thought of riding for hours just to find something good doesn't bum me out, it's the thought of riding for hours on those roads just to get back home after a good ride. Haha.

When I whine like that to other riders, I almost always have the same conversation:
"No, there are plenty of good places to ride in Oklahoma!"
"Where?"
"Arkansas."

So, in other words, I hope to move soon.

You didn't say where you were located or what you are riding, but I did a wine tour in Oklahoma in 2005; I visited about 6 wineries all south of Okla. city, east of IH35 and west of US 69. Some were located on dirt or gravel roads and some on paved. It was a wonderful time I remember and would do it again. Also lots of pretty riding north of Idabel and over to the Ark border. You are right most of Okla is flat and open but there are some pretty places to ride. In 2005 I don't remember the paved roads being so bad; when there are rough roads, I slow down; when there are pot holes, I ride around them. I've see those kind of roads in about every state and I've seen good roads also, just go with the flow and enjoy.

We are 100+ all week, but next Sunday-Tuesday are forecast as 91-94F highs with 70's lows. Riding season starts again!

It'll be low 100's where I live and it's been getting a little cooler in the mornings. Hopefully the bike will have new sneakers soon.

:thumb Yep...cooling off so it's about time to put the thermal liner back in the jacket... ;)

Just replaced the rotors & pads on my RS. Gonna check out a few more things before I take it off the lift & then I'll be ready to put some more miles on it.

Thermal liner? I am still in shorts and a tee shirt in January. :laugh

I have a new CF body to go with new tires for the riding season. Next week the CF gets film over it.

Spent another 5 weeks touring the Alps...for my 19th year in a row. :nyah

When I got back home, I got my 1990 BMW R100 GS back on the road for the first time since 2002. It was also the first time I've turned a wheel on this continent in about 5 years.

Alex,

I lived in Germany for six years and visited Europe another 15 or so times. I've skied, ridden and driven in the Alps a fair amount of times and it is fantastic place, but I do wonder what keeps you going back for so many years. And, evidently at the exclusion of so many other great places to ride. I think I would have moved on to other wonders. Just curious.

I do wonder what keeps you going back for so many years.

A few reasons; logistics and time. If I had to rent a motorcycle where ever I went, I'd feel raped. Plus I like riding my own motorcycle and since I have one there, I ride there. It is cheaper to tour there than here and I've got the Excel spreadsheets to prove it since I have toured here and there.

And the number-one reason: I get far better riding for less money. A win-win scenario. Then there is the food and drink.

And, evidently at the exclusion of so many other great places to ride. I think I would have moved on to other wonders. Just curious.

I will as soon as I retire and have all year to ride...soon...very soon. ;)

Mine is just starting

But winter was a blast. New 90th anniversary edition RT and 4 days after purchase took off on a 4500km ride to the Snowy Mountains etc. The rest was average rides of 600kms each. in perfect winter weather with an average !8 deg C temp and fine fine weather.
Now summer is shaping up to be one hell of a hoot.
best regards
Paul

photo (31).jpgNew R12RT mid June and then swimming pool built in July. Totaled 2,000 miles thus far on bike, but hours with grand kids in pool...actually a great combination. Best times in the water, but knowing the bike is there whenever...can't beat it. Also note the Cialis chairs;)

It is not quite over yet, I hope! We had some nice rides, in spite of the fact that the pain in the hips prevented me from riding a couple of my bikes at all., and a week-long excursion to Maine had to be cancelled due to work commitments...

Summer is not over here. 94F today and dry. Tomorrow 89F and I'll ride to work and then play.

whats not to like about riding in Germany. I am stationed here and enjoy riding different places. It does not matter where, just riding to different spots. I too rode the Alps this year for the 1st time, would do it again, but I don't know if I could afford to fly from the states to here as globalrider does. If I am not deployed I will goto the Alps again next year. But our Summer was kinda short this year, still riding my euro spec 85 R80 though, I put approx. 10,000.00 kilometers on it this year. Plan to buy a 14 1200GS in feb, not going to replace the airhead, its going to get restored when I return to the states, then I can participate in the great sounding MOA events. There are none here unfortunately. I can start a chapter here that speaks English if possible. Another member just got stationed here a month ago, that makes 2.

I was out on the bike today for the first time in quite a while. Went over Usery Pass to Bush Highway, then past Saguaro Lake and back home on the Beeline Highway. Not a long ride...about 60 mi...but nice to get out & test out the new brakes & small tweaks to the bike. It wasn't too bad except when stopped at lights it got a bit warm. Hoping to do a lot more now that it's 'cooling' off. All the National Forest rec areas along Bush Hwy were closed due to the 'shutdown'...oh well.
