As to why there are two ABS lights rather than one ... it's a mystery to me. Perhaps at one time they indicated whether a fault lay in the front or rear ABS unit. My 2000 manual, however, doesn't make any distinction. It just says that a fault is indicated if the lights flash in an opposed pattern (one on, one off). The manual doesn't actually describe anything that couldn't be indicated with a single lamp. So my guess is that a design change occurred somewhere along the line, but the cluster layout wasn't altered.
Yes, there is an irritating side stand switch that cuts the starter.
It should also start in any gear if you hold the clutch in. If it doesn't, the clutch switch is faulty.
The different way the two lights flash will indicate different problems. The lights can flash alternately or together, for example. How are you going to do that with one light???
