I have heard that there are imposter points floating around.

Is there a way, or are there any for sure identifying marks on the genuine Bosch/BMW point sets?

How can one know if he/she has the factory ones? Are the factory ones still available or do the normal BMW parts places (Bob's, Hucky's, Max's) have the alternate non-BMW points?

Matt Parkhouse did an article on this in an Owner's New within something like the past two years. Quite a few ONs are now on-line.

The key thing is that the rubbing block was very tall as compared to a good set of points. If you saw Matt's pictures, it would be obvious. I think you want Norris points. BMW Hucky lists Noris points on his website.

Edit...found it...September 2010, page 36...and the issue is on-line.
 
Bob's BMW carries the Noris [ or is it Norris?] points, I by chance ordered a set yesterday and the parts man assured me that they had the good ones. Good over the phone service from those guys and they have always sent me the right stuff the first time.

The weird thing is the "imposter" points are the ones sold by most dealers. So they aren't imposters they are merely faulty. Some dealers, and Bob's is one of them, will offer you the Norris points and explain the reason. If you are one of those that are going to insist on the OEM product they have it but this is not one of the times that that's a good idea.

The faulty points can be fixed with a small file. File the rubbing block down a smidgen.
 
From Matt's September 2010 article on the Norris versus "faulty" points. The faulty ones were from China and have the very tall rubbing block.

Pics really helpful.

I had purchased some used stuff, and there were two pretty good looking points sets in there. Both appear to be the "good" ones and not the ones with the too-long rubbing point.
 
One would think that "they" would have exhausted the supply of bogus stuff by now. There's probably a couple of 40' seatrains full of them sitting somewhere...
