Driving out to the rally in Salem from NE Georgia with a detour on way out to Arroyo Grande, Ca. to visit wife's cousin, then head up coast to Salem. Back in the saddle for 4 years after 25 year hiatus. Have not done a trip of this magnitude ever, so my endurance level is somewhat unknown which is why I am building cushion on the trip out so I can calibrate myself.
Currently planning a route that will pick up I-70 in St. Louis and follow through Denver then pick up I-15 and head down to Calif. The thought process is to stay on slab first few days to calibrate endurance, then play it by ear after that. If I find that endurance is good and I make it out to say Denver in good time, then I would like to opt for some non-slab routes that would take me along a similar line as I-70 and I-15 and still be able to make reasonably good time while enhancing the enjoyment factor.
So, long winded way of saying I would like some recommendations for some non slab routes that would get me to calif coast between LA and SF from Denver area, while still making reasonable time. Bike is R1100RT so need to be on pavement. Thanks.....
