95 R1100RS-Whirring / Scraping Sound in Neutral

Folks,

I went to look at a 95 R1100RS today. It made an odd noise I've never heard form an oilhead. In neutral there was a distinct whirring / scraping sound coming from the transmission area. It went away completely when the clutch was pulled in. I didn't get a chance to ride the bike or mess with it too much, so that's all the data I have. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,

Jim Moore

Wouldn't the throwout bearing be more likely to make noise with the clutch pulled in? This was the opposite.

perhaps one of the small coil springs on the driven disc, or on the pressure plate has broken / the small pieces are loose and rattling around ......?
This situation happens a lot on cars, so..??
sounds like it's time to "open and look:..??

change the transmission oil. If its l lunched you will know it.

starter removal would show the clutch spring thing the guy posted above.

Find out what it is before you buy it.

noise

It most likely a transmission issue. I replaced the tranny in my 1994 R1100RS at 68,000 miles but my first R1100RS had the change made under warranty at 28,000. On the replacement I was fortunate to find a low mileage tranny from a 1996 RT. I had to paint it silver but it was a lot less costly than a rebuild. The noise with the clutch engaged is indicative of tranny noise. The proof will be in the oil.

Good Luck
