NHTSA's R1200 Fuel Leak Investigation

There has been some action in NHTSA's Preliminary Evaluation of R1200 fuel leaks. NHTSA sent an 8 page letter to BMW NA asking for all kinds of data. You can download the letter here. Type PE12036 in the QUICK SEARCH - NHTSA Action Number box and click Search. On the subsequent page click on Document Search and open the item IR TO MFR.

Despite being a German and a fan of BMW, I agree that this is good news.
It is very clear that BMW has lowered it's customer service to an unacceptable low level and is hurting not just it's own brand but all other German products via association.

The issue is not that there might be a unreliable part(s) in a product, but rather the way a company deals with such issues and the customers effected.

Dragging them through the media and putting it in the public eye will hurt them far more then any fines given.
Hopefully BMW will now take some real action to recover it's reputation.

What does MY stand for?

I notice the part # is the same as my 2011. But their letter only deals with model year up to 2008??

Dave,

According to their letter, NHTSA has only received complaints from owners of 05 - 08 bikes. Newer machines have not had enough time to exhibit the failure. I recommend you contact NHTSA with your concern. There's a contact phone number in the last paragraph of the letter.

I think this will result in something happening. Indeed - Karl, thanks for keeping us all informed! :clap
I wouldn't mind getting reimbursed for the cost to fix mine on the way to the MOA Rally last year. Wasn't cheap, not to mention trip interuption, getting trailer dragged 100 miles and back. First time in 50 plus riding years on BMW that I've been broken or in an 'unsafe to ride' situation. It was an adventure but I'd certainly prefer not to have had that happen....:doh

I'd think the new-design parts with the metal ring are obviously not included. This is supposed to be the solution, right? Did they come online in 2009?

Kent,

I think they came later. And not all models have the new flange with the metal ring. I had the pump on my 2007 R1200ST replaced a few months ago and got the same part number, without the ring, as the failed part. I even had to wait over a month for the part to be made, since STs are so few and far between that some parts are not stocked.

The metal ring is not on my 2011 K1300S. A friend had his K1200S leak this year and the new replacement part had the metal ring on it.

Missing ODI in investigation

I wonder how many complaints they are missing. I filed complaint 10464617 on 6/8/2012. This is the list that was compiled for the PE12036 investigation opened 11/16/2012 :

The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following ODI identification numbers: 10449393, 10457823, 10475150, 10471642, 10356156, 10433733, 10442023, 10445888, 10453738, 10474390, 10417320, 10444876, 10444670, 10448104, 10425962, 10430734, 10443840, 10448325, 10471518, 10451907, 10433589, 10430822, 10467136, 10445954, 10432269, 10437222, 10444742, 10452476.

My complaint, number 10458636, was also missing, so I contacted NHTSA. I strongly recommend anyone else with a missing complaint to do the same.

How do we do that simply?

Your Confirmation number (ODI Number) is: 10485789

Not shown in your list. I don't have time to go digging into their site again. Thanks.

At the end of the letter from NHTSA to BMW is the name and telephone number of a point of contact: Bob Young, 202-366-4806. I would contact Mr. Young and give him your complaint number.

Great suggestion, since from experience, it's entirely possible for different people to post a complaint under different sections/case numbers.. so while you may have done yours on line, it may be lost in their system due to this. Be good if Mr. Young knows where to look for other relevant complaints.
