Starter remains engaged after engine starts

Bike is 1988 R100RS. Search= no results.

Seems as if I do not release the starter switch just as the engine starts, the starter continues to try to spin with the flywheel with a loud "claaaang".

I have a vague recollection that once the engine catches, there is some kind of cut-out switch to prevent "juice" to go to the starter when the engine is running like, for example, accidentally hitting the start button. Whatever that is does not seem to be working.

Anyone can shed light on this issue?

Sounds like u might have a bad starter relay, relay might be staying open or the starter itself. You should check the starter out also. The airheads of that time frame had a starter problem.

Relay - possible but then it ought to just keep spinning.

Solenoid - more likely

Gummed up/worn/cruddy starter drive - most likely.

The starter drive gear is supposed to snap back out of the way. It isn't doing it.

I also vote on the gummed up starter. My 95RT did much the same thing until I cleaned the starter (Valeo). It would stick for a few minutes and finally release. Never had the problem with any Bosch starters though.

I have also had the starter switch itself gum up and not release. Check it out and clean with contact cleaner.
