The Video Thread

Loved this ride. Gotta know what camera you used - the video was good, but the audio was about the best I've heard on a motorcycle.

I downloaded it in HD, which takes a half hour when you have Internet stuck in you by Time Warner. Then, played it on the HDTV across the room, and it was terrific. It had me leaning into the turns with you. Sound was great, color looked realistic, not 'blown-out.'

This is the kind of video I'd like to be able to shoot, without a bunch of fuss and setup. Just leave the camera mount on my helmet, and click it in place before a good ride.

Please let me know the make/model you used.

Jim, I cheat. A lot. The video is from two cameras plus an external portable stereo recorder for the audio. The camera on the helmet is an older Contour HD. It maxes out at 720p... I record in its highest quality (default is mid quality) then upres it to 1080p before editing. The audio from that camera is atrocious and was tossed. The second camera is a Drift Stealth HD. When the newer smaller Drift went on sale a month or three ago Amazon discounted the now old stealth model to under $200. It shoots 1080p. The audio is better than the Contour, but still not all that great. The audio recorder is the Zoom H1. Not as good as the H4n, but at less than 1/3 the price (about $85 if you look around) good enough. I added a wind sock then stuck the recorder between tank bag and map case, facing me. I reversed the left and right channels in post processing.

The setup looks like this... the fuzzy thing is the wind sock over the recorder.

There wasn't much fuss to take the video. Turn camera 1 on, hit record. Turn camera 2 on, hit record. Turn recorder on, hit record. Take ride. The fuss comes after when I ingest the video and audio, upres the video from the Contour, sync the two cameras and audio, then start editing. The video from the bike mounted camera is close to unusable when the bike is idling and at low speeds in 1st gear. Too much bouncing around. The helmet mounted camera lets me fill in where I can't use the better video from the other camera. That three minutes was extracted from the first half of about 40 minutes worth of video. The audio is about 80% from the Zoom and about 20 % from the Drift. Post processing was done on a Mac using Final Cut Pro X.

Enough video geeking out. Since this is the video thread let me end with a video... it starts where the last video left off.

:thumb Nice, Finn.

It looks like for some of that footage you had the camera mounted to your crash bars. Yes? I've tried mounting a camera to the crash bars on my R12GS but the vibration was so bad I didn't get any useable video. Were you using some kind of shock mount or is it just the difference between the R1200 and the F800?

Thanks fellows!

I use a Manfrotto variable friction Magic Arm + a Super Clamp for mounting my cameras in precarious places to get The Shot. (or at least slightly more interesting angles)
No shock mount, just dead weight. It's a pretty heavy-duty piece, I'd imagine it could help absorb the vibrations.

I doubt the little R has much less vibrations, just that the waves are far higher in frequency. I'm not sure what that translates through the lens, but I'll have to go shoot something like this on my 1200R to see.

Couldn't find any photos of the mount on the 8R, but here it is on my 8GS.

And to keep the video flowing in the video thread, here's a couple short unedited clip from another nearby ride, this time off tarmac and two-up.... I get lazy when it comes to video editing at home for fun.... most of my focus is on still images, I do video at work though more of the playback and live type stuff.

Eight minutes of a full race stage at Black River Stages, a rally race held in Upstate NY. This was from last September. Chest mounted GoPro. Race starts about a minute in. :D I'm riding a 1990 R100GSPD.

Very cool Stagehand! Thanks for sharing.

Now, go run some feeder, then run some out these motors out please. :)

j/k, I'm a Roadie. :thumb

Here's few unedited video clips of mine. My ADDHD keeps me from spending too much time playing with video....

No engine needed while on this decent going down the Pete King trail on the Tour of Idaho while riding loaded on my GS solo.
Focus! ;)

More unedited video, this one's a long black diamond climb at Rohwer Flats OHV area.
15/45 gearing sure does help with this sort of climbing. :evil

Nikon D800 video features BMW bike

I was looking at the Nikon USA website's info on the new D800 -
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25480/D800.html

The video capability of this Nikon is much improved over earlier offerings. To demonstrate this capability Nikon created a little video. My personal riding style is a bit more risk averse than portrayed in this video - I did like the behind scenes video - (they used quite a few cameras!) Sorry! The embed won't work.

nicely done. I liked the multi-image presentation; the segments seemed to tie together well. That means that you likely spent a LOT of time editing.

The time spent editing and organizing the video made it something that is very interesting to watch. [So where is the return trip video? Or, are you still in Panama? :) ]

When I embed one of my vimeo videos, they automatically launch, and if there are several videos together, they all launch. Very annoying and having competing soundtracks doesn't help. Anyone know why?

I'm copying the embed code and pasting it, and have done this in the past OK (see a few posts above), but now have this problem and assume there's some setting for my videos allowing automatic launch but can't find what it is??

There's snow and ice on the roads so I was looking through this thread for some couch and fireside riding.

Here is a video I took last year in western Virginia on Rt 60 leading to the BRP with my GoPro Hero 2 camera mounted on the forward edge of the left pannier. I didn't add music, BMW did it for me.

Its my first try at linking to my Smugmug account for a video. Someone please let me know if it isn't showing up ok.
Thanks,
Tom
