BMW Roadside Assistance

tinytrains

Still plays with trains.
My R1200R was in the shop waiting on a fuel strip :banghead and the dealer lent me an R1150RT for the week. I had to use the roadside assistance last night when the loaner died. They had no problem covering the loaner, but they only covered the first $50. Is that all they do for us? :dunno

Scott

No. I've been towed 180 miles this summer to the nearest dealer....no charge and last summer I was towed about 150 miles, also no charge. A tow service that only provides 50 dollars of service would be absolutely worthless.

In my opinion, the dealer should be paying to get their bike back. But the BMW tow should have been free. My understanding is they take you to the nearest dealer. This summer I didn't have a choice of dealers, they looked up the closest and that's where they were taking me.

I gotta say, these tow drivers that take us long distances are the nicest people, No problem stopping for food, restrooms, etc. Even drop me at a motel.

Don't know about BMW Assistance, but no way I'd be paying for a dealer loaner that breaks down. Are you pursuing this?

I agree, if a loaner breaks down and its not my fault. oh well shame on you for lending me a clunker, and I would not pay one dime towards this repair...

I live 35 miles from the dealer, and had driven another 30 miles away. The dealer told me to get it home, and they would bring my bike and pick up the clunker. I agree, it would have been nice for them to pay for the towing, but there is no agreement on any of this. Had I not been 60 miles away in LA rush hour traffic, they would have come and got me. I now carry info on motorcycle towing which I assume to be cheaper than a flat bed. I also need to talk to BMW assistance. I suspect they priced it on getting to the nearest dealer, which would have been no help, since it was not their bike.

From now on, any loaner bikes stay in the garage.

Me too:(

Its been a few years, but my BMW Roadside covered $100 up front only and I refused it for a FD failure in AZ to the BMW Shop in Phoenix. I simply rented a UHaul truck and trucked my bike home 700miles. Cost was 274$ total, a much better option than the 700$ tow truck, I was quoted on the side of the road. I simply had to ride the broken KLT1200 to town about 5 miles, broken FD and all on the side of the road really slow, but got r done. BMW Warranty fixed it. Funny thing, after a lot of phone chat with insurance plan by BMW at only $100 coverage, they payed the entire UHaul bill:), with proof of warranty work done:). Randy:thumb

+1, Gunny; my Son Seth and I center punched a deer last Thursday morning between Torrey and Boulder, Utah at 9am. I called BMW Roadside Assistance and Roger took care of everything perfectly and by 5pm we and our damaged K1600GT were at BMW Motorcycles of Salt Lake City. Absolutely no charge, BMW NA covered every last cent.

Midnight on 10/13 we were safely back in our Chandler home, flying to AZ on Delta.

I'm currently writing a letter to BMW NA complimenting their truly outstanding service!

one approach

plan on being able to rent a trailer and a tow vehicle along your trip. more bucks (maybe) but easier in the long run.

i had need to use Roadside Assistance last year. Free, to the nearest dealer. Problem for me was that nearest dealer was closed (sunday), i live 60 miles from them, and my local shop is only 10 miles from my house. Tow to nearest dealer would have been free.
i ended up using AMA's services, which got me free for 35 miles. cooperative g/f with bike trailer met me there to get bike rest of way home.

oh, and your LA dealer had better pick up any $ out of pocket you laid out. their bike, their responsibility, not yours at all.

I used it once this year. It took a while (and two calls) to get a person on the line. She was professional and booked a tow truck immediately. The following morning I was towed 1/2 way across Utah - from Wendover to Salt Lake City. No charge. The tow truck was a little sketchy though (we had to pull over twice to bleed the brakes, no AC), but the driver and his girlfriend were a blast to hang out with (they stopped at the casino before picking up my bike).

Unfortunately, I had to wait two days for the dealership to open and fix my bike (final drive seal failure #2).

The dealer sent me a note and they are going to pay for the towing. I suspect they wanted to see the bike before committing to pay.

It seems BMW assistance is a roll of the dice when you call as to what they provide. I will look into options.

Thanks,
Scott

Don't feel bad;

My breakdown was about 2003 and the $100 was indeed ALL the BMW contract program put forth at that time. The assistance program has been a round for maybe 10 years now and likely changed through the years. Sounds like today it gets r done, as most suggest. Randy:thumb

i am pretty sure that the policy states "will tow to nearest BMW dealer, no charge"- or something to that general effect. if you want to go elsewhere, that is when your pocket gets opened up.

That's correct.
I got my Roadside Assistance booklet out and it states, your bike will be transported to the nearest authorized BMW Motorrad USA dealership. You may also elect to have your motorcycle towed to the BMW Motorrad USA dealership of your choice, provided the dealership is within a 50 mile radius of the closest dealership.

This is a change from our last new bikes. When we bought bikes in 2003 Roadside Assistance would only cover $100 of the tow.

This has been my experience with two long distance tows. Both times I was towed well over 100 miles at no cost to me.

Last week I got a letter from BMW about my roadside assist expiring (36 months) and asking if I wanted to renew it. I called today to verify it was the same "tow to nearest dealer" and it is not. The company with the POST WARANTEE towing service administers a different plan than what you get the first 3 years. The post-warantee plan is limited to 100 miles and then if you need to go farther it's a by the mile charge.

Since I already have AAA with Motorcycle roadside assist that includes 100 miles, I'm just sticking with that. It's really easy to be more than 100 miles from a dealer in this great country of ours.

Allstate RV Roadhelp is a better option than what I know about BMW's Roadside Assistance plan.

https://www.allstatemotorclub.com/amc/member_services/membershipplans.faces

Membership Promo for the first year at $74.

Jim Winterer asked them directly about motorcycle coverages:

"<<The one a motorcyclist would want is the "RV Roadside Assistance". >>

This reply, pasted below, that I received today from Allstate might be helpful. It answered my questions. I do have the towing plan through my AMA membership (which I used once and it worked fine several years ago) but I'm thinking the "RV" plan described below is a reasonable upgrade. the world "unlimited" has a nice ring to it. It's $110.

Here was what they wrote:

Thank you for your interest in Allstate Motor Club.

The Allstate motor Club covers the member not the vehicle.

Our membership plans have dollar limitations not miles.

However if the cost of towing exceeds the benefit limit you need to pay the differential amount.

For e.g. Platinum Elite plan covers you up to benefit limit of $250 each time you need a service. If the cost of towing to repair shop is $174 then you would not have to pay the provider anything, but if the cost of the tow is $260 then Allstate Motor Club will pay $250 and you would have to pay $10 to the provider.

The motorcycle is covered in the following three plans they are Platinum Elite Plan Deluxe Plan R V Road

The Allstate Deluxe Plan costs $134.00 annually. There is no additional fee to add a spouse or designated other person to the membership. You get 4 service calls per membership year and a benefit limit of up to $150.00 that we pay per each of the 4 service calls.

The Allstate Platinum Elite Plan costs $174.00 annually. There is no additional fee to add a spouse or designated other person to the membership. You get unlimited service calls per membership year and a benefit limit of up to $250.00.

The Allstate RV Road help Plan costs $109.95 annually. There is no additional fee to add a spouse or designated other person to the membership. You can not add any other person to the membership. There is no service call limit or benefit limit. The only stipulation is that if your vehicle is towed it must be towed to the closest place of repair.

You can review the benefits online as well as sign up for the membership on our website at www.allstatemotorclub.com or call our Customer Service at 1-800-347-8880.

Texas Residents not covered

Also you really need to read the fine print on the BMW Roadside Assistance it does not cover trip interruption costs for Texas Residents, the only think it covers is $50 towing for Texas Residents. Found this out after I broke down for a week in Santa Fe.

The arranged for a car and hotel, then when I filed the claim it was denied.

Used it and it was great

I do have the roadside assistance due to it coming with the purchase of my R1200RT.

Never thought I would need it. But I did only once in 6 years. I called the roadside service by BMW and they setup the tow truck and sent it to me. It did take 2 hours but that was not their fault. After towing me to the closest BMW service shop, I signed a paper and off went the driver. I did tip the guy, but the service cost me nothing. Why you paid $50 I have no idea. I would ask for money back.

By the way, now that free service that was included with my purchase is gone. So I have towing included on my policy for $10 per year. They will tow up to 200 miles and over that I am responsible.
