    Twin Spark Oilheads?

Anybody now if all the R1150xx's are twin spark engines? If not, when did the twin spark heads come in? TIA

The twins spark began in 2004. I think the cruisers may have been twins spark earlier than 2004. I am sure someone else can verify (or correct) me on this.

Actually the 2004 USA 1150 GS is known to the rest of the world as the 2003 GS, so in reality the dual spark GSs began with the 2003 model, except in the US.

that's because production date always preceeds model year date by a year or so, and Euro release typically preceeds US release by an additional year. (my 2001 bike was produced in June 2000)

If I am right, twin spark does not refer to twin spark plugs but to the spark plug firing twice per cycle (each time the piston comes to TDC).

Correct me if I am wrong. I have a 2004 GS Twin Spark.

    You're wrong........

A Twin Spark engine has two spark plugs. One in the "normal" place and another under the cylinder.

My 2004 Rockster had a single spark engine, but my 2004 R1150RS had dual spark. As far as I know, none of the R11XXS bikes ever had dual spark.....?

Thanks, folks. Looks like I really need to look at the build date of the specific bike, but by '04 they were all changed over.

    Easy to tell

Just look at the valve covers. It's easy to tell a single plug bike from a dual plug. My single plug valve cover has a single plastic piece that runs horizontal across the entire cover. The twin sparks have a horizontal plastic piece that only runs across half the cover and at the center of the cover the plastic piece is round.

Bought my twin spark '04 1150 GS in May of 2003. BMW just renamed the US 2003 GSs 2004. Whenever I order parts from Motobins in England I have to specify 2003.
