Slow crank but turns over

slow cranking

I had a slow cranking problem with my 04 1150 rt replaced the battery same problem . Fallow what Paul Graves wrote earlier mine turned out to be starter, replaced it and now it starts better than new.

Almost 2 pages of advice here but I wonder what PattiB decided to do ? :ear

With temperatures below freezing now maybe it's hibernation time!

Slow Cranking/Won't Start

As a general comment, I use simple volt meter to do non-invasive tests in this type of situation. With the battery fully charged, and probes at the battery terminals:

Standing voltage with key off?
Voltage with key on?
Voltage while cranking?

I expect 12.6 or higher key off. Engine off, key on I expect something just over 12v. Cranking an Oilhead it is not unusual to see a low 11.something. Down in the tens I expect to find either a battery, a connection, or a starter problem. Or a really cold motor with heavy weight oil.

I'm having a cranking/starting problem on a 2004 R1100S. I get 13.2V key off, 12.7V key on and 1.5V - 3.5V with starter engaged. The battery tested good at standing voltage and under load at a battery place. I've run the ground wires and don't find anything wrong. If next step is the starter, what do I look for? With it disconnected and off the bike would I be able to detect anything by spinning the gear? It seemed really noisy when doing the voltage check, both turning and when the solenoid engages, but that's the first time I've run the starter in an enclosed space, so maybe a red herring.

Thanks all, for any help you can give.
