Wow, is that 900 lbs. of pure poetic riding bliss or what?
Do you ever go home? :thumb

Remember that we are talking setting up for the Iron Butt Rally which is a timed event.

Here are my reasons for two GPS units.

i was thinking, "the V doesnt hold much" (i have a III, and it doesnt hold $(%*) and the 2610 hold everything, so using the V as a fancy chronometer/calculator makes perfect sense to me.

thanks rob. good luck in the rally.

Does a "Handy Lift" count as gear? If so, mine arrived yesterday.

I can't put it on my GS but, I sure can put my GS on it! :twirl

Thanks very much.

Today I went up to New Hampshire to check in on the modifications to the bike. I wrote this up in a short post on the YB Board.

To say I am getting excited would be an understatement.

If there is interest I will keep folks posted on the progress.

Best,

Rob Nye

I can't imagine you ever being excited...

I think that the modifications could be worthy of its own thread in the Gear Forum, perhaps "How ROb Nye turned a GS into a Long Distance Machine" or "Turning a GS into an Iron Butt entrant" or "Rob destroys a perfectly good GS." ;)

Sounds like a chapter book.

Chapter one: Before :dunno

Chapter two: During :wow

Chapter three: After :doh

Now would the time frame be before/during/after the modifications or the Rally? :thumb

I like bikes
Rob,

Careful of those crash bars. They come awful close to the tank edge when the tank is full.

Sorry you couldn't make DVD!

Greg,

The Touratechs do fit with the tank correct? Is there some movement of the tank between empty and full?

The bars that came with the bike will not work with the Touratech tank plus the welds at the top aft mount were broken. Max noted that this is a known failure point with the stock adventure carshbars.

I was really looking forward to DVD, although given that I would have camped next to Kbasa (and been flooded too) and the weather wasn't good enough to have provided the necessary escape from the frozen N.E. I am happy to have saved the $$$ for another trip west. I would really like to come out for a weekend of camping or if it could work the 49'er.

Modifications

'O2 1150 GS. My love.

Swapped stock screen for Adventure screen...
then added Tobinators. (They work)!

Since I don't ride off-road anymore, I changes to
changed to 17" rims. Better choice of tires and the
handling (already great ) is even better. It runs on Metzler Z6's.

New wheels meant matching front and a rear fender.
Took off the Mudguard.

Tried a StaIntune system. OK. Sold it and put on a Remus.
Throttle a bit more responsive even at higher speeds. Bit more
sound. Very pleasant.

Had a Bill Mayer seat made for a 4 Corner ride. Not pleased. He and I have talked and he'll do whatever he'll do. Did find a solution that seems to suit...
remound seat mounts and added a 1/2" bar/spacer that seems to raise the seat in front a bit. Now the stock seat is firm but quite comfortable.

PIAA mounted on GTM brackets. Very clean install and lots of light at night.
Also added some sort of high intensity brake light/license plate thing.

XM Radio is great. SkyFi with MixIt drive custom ear bud speakers from E.A.R. Sound is great.

Added Kissan Signal Minder. It keeps the green signal lights on full time.
Bothered me at firsty. Now it doesn't.

Stebel compact dual airhorn is really a horn+.

Use a Wunderlich expandle/removable pack in place of passenger seat.
Only use the system cases on a longer trip. Little bag on handles bars and on
back rack.

Love this motorcycle.

Modifications

Please excuse the typos in the email just posted.
Trying to do too many things at the same time.

Bump.

Great thread that needed resurrection back to page 1.

I'm fairly new to the R1200GS as its only been a month and 1,500 miles, so I'm still pondering things. No "mods" yet on my 12GS, but here are my additions:

- 12GS hard side cases
- Marsee 15 ltr teardrop tankbag
- Alaska Leather sheepskin buttpad (on order... hope it stops the one hour butt burn)

My GS?

BMW NavII
Rick Mayer Seat
RCU Light Bar with PIAA 510s
BMW crash bars
BMW bags

I've added GS mirrors to the handlebars so I can see behind me.
I've added an alaskaleather.com medium cruiser buttpad so I can ride 50+ miles.

Wish list:
