Radar Detector Mounting

I have ordered a radar detector that should be here in a couple of days. I could go on a rant why I bought one but let's not. I also bought an accessory shelf for my 2010 RT which I have installed. My plan is to just Velcro the detector to the shelf. I already have ram mounted gadgets on the steering head. Anyone else use a similar setup and will it work well there or does it need to be higher?
 
Although not an RT, I had a shelf with radar attached by velcro on a previous LT and doing the same on my new LT. It works well, very secure and easy to place & remove.
 
I mounted mine with Velcro just off to the right side of center above the gauges. I did not get a shelf so it aims down a bit, still works great. I need to replace the velcro once a year or so. I've had it pop off at speed so a lanyard, or in my case, a very solid audio and electrical connection saved me from losing it.

Did you use industrial strength Velcro? I have used the stronger industrial strength and never had it shift, much less come loose. On my first LT, I never replaced the Velcro in 3-years.
 
The industrial strength holds TOO well. I would go to remove it and the velcro would come off the detector and stay hooked. Since I remove the detector every time I leave the bike to eat, etc., I went with lesser strength. It works fine, I just have to put on a fresh set each year as the constant on/off wears it out.

The only time it came off was at around 110mph, under 80 it is always rock solid.
 
On one of my bikes, I use the Ram mount with the magnetic power plate base and the small piece of metal that attaches to the radar detector.

I'd guess that it's removing the detector often that causes the need for new velcro. Back when I used a detector it mostly lived on the bike, only coming off a couple times a year. I used standard stick-on velcro. The same velcro lasted at least 6 years, maybe longer. It was still OK when I stopped using the detector.
 
Yes, that is it exactly. I use the same velcro for holding my MixIT amp under the seat. 5 years, good as new. But on/off 100 repetitions or so a year reduces the grip power a lot.
 
Thanks for the feedback. It will be nice when the economy picks up and the police can get back to catching real criminals again. Oops, I started the rant! I promise though that is all I will say. For now. Without mentioning Michigan Troopers. Damn, ok I promise to stop ranting about 5 mph over tickets by Michigan Troopers in 3,2,1.
 
I have the Escort 9500ix and I'm trying to figure out the best place to mount this. The bottom of the unit is not flat, rather it has a step in it. I have the accessory shelf but I am considering the mirror hole mount for the left side handlebar. Has anyone else got the 1150RT 02 with the 9500ix? where did you find the best placement and what product did you use? -G

Mine's in the tank bag. That effectively kills laser detection, but if you get hit with that, it's too late anyway. I rely on the audio through the Autocom. It works.
 
Yes, if you are hit with laser, you're busted. Bottom line, don't lead the pack however, the unit will pick up laser scatter and that's the trick. Aside from taking the obvious precautions and being very alert. Have others used the mounts that rest on the handlebars or mirror holes?
 
The most secure Velcro-type fastener is 3M's Dual-Lock. The two sides are identical and actually snap together. It's harder to find (Aerostich has it as do some auto parts stores). A warning, tho: it can be a bear to get apart if you use too much. I just use two strips of the industrial strength Velcro.

Thanks for that info. I'm on the east coast, NY on Long Island. If I want to be a cheap-o, I heard that I can drive to the tolls at any of the bridges here and ask for the 3m strips. Someone wrote that they will let you grab a handful of those. If tomorrow is nice, I'll take a spin to the Throgs Neck Bridge and try it out.
 
Olsensan, for the $8 they get to cross the George Washington, they can afford to toss you a freebee.

Don't know about NY's EZPass, but here in MA we have "FastLane" (same thing) and they give us 3M DualLock to stick the transponder on. Works great for a radar detector, too.
 
Yup, that is what I am talking about. Rather than go accross the bridge, I'll just let them know and I'll do a U turn.
 
3M's Duo Lock is the best stuff for that application. You can get it by the foot at West Marine, or other Marine Supply Stores. I got what I consider to be a lifetime supply on eBay for like $15 bucks. I still have a bag of the stuff waiting for my next "great idea"
 
DuoLock needs to be refreshed once in awhile if you use it out in the weather. I did lose a toll pass when it failed.
