Thx for Ur kind comments. I rode that R90/6 like this for 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Not real sure; the odometer was pretty erratic during this time. Finally gave up the ghost and bit the dust. Rode it pretty much like this on trips to 3 or 4 Daytona Bike Week trips. A couple of times down to Key West and Flamingo Point. Those were the days.

    Old School Touring

Most of my tours were done pre computer. When I crossed state lines, I would pull into the state welcome centers. Pick up the free state highway maps and any free city maps that I thought would help. Usually I would pick up several state maps. At first, I generally tore them up to get the right area to fit the tank bag map pouch. I learned to separate the maps on their natural fold up creases. I kept my eyes open for any area tourist info centers. Anything to help me find my way. Yep, those pre gps days seem so old school now.

    Startling to Ride

Back in Ď82 when I stated riding my Ď71 R50/5, My gear was what I normally was wearing; blue jeans, a t- shirt, or long sleeve t, work shoes. I was riding; it was summer. As it got cooler, I started layering. If the weather was even halfway decent, Iím riding. Levi jacket was a no brainer.

Dug around in the shed and found my old Levi jacket I wore. It kinda sorta worked.
I can still kinda get it on.

Swede jacket with Thinsulate liner, it worked for me at the time.

    Newbie to Rally Rat

I was hitting the local rallies, it seemed like half the guys were doing it like me. The other riders had the state of the art leather gear. Well, anyway I got there and I was having a blast. Hanging around the campfires was the norm. I went from being the new guy newbie to one of the rally rats. I was hanging with my Ďpeoplesí. At every little mini-rally; Whereís the next meet-up.

    My Ď87 K100RT

Beautiful RT. Added a lot of accessories. Heat shields, air vents, stereo, aftermarket seats, rear rack, bar backs, heated grips, crash bars and hiway pegs, soft luggage, tank bag, striping, so on and so forth. Probably more stuff I canít remember. Rode it about 50,000 miles. I liked the looks of the bike, hated riding it. My knees took a beating from the back of the lower fairing. Really sad, I liked the bike; but.

On a little ride over to the Ozarks of Arkansas probably 25 or so years ago. This is in the little community of Magness, Arkansas. The little building behind the bike is the water dept. pump house and the other building was city hall. Back in the early 60ís I watched my Granddad play checkers and dominoes here with all the other old guys in the area. As a little kid I could walk here from his little farm. When I came with him, it was on his old Ď53 Chevy. Good memories.

I still got the bike, itís in the back of the garage. Iíve removed the fairing. Iíve acquired couple of headlight assembles and more parts to turn the bike into a K100 standard. When the bike returns it wonít be bruising my knees.

I started riding in the early 1980ís on my Ď71 R50/5. Ran across a few Beemer riders and found out about some local BMW rider rallies. I say local, I mean less than 200 miles one way. I was up for it. As I s as trended these mini rallies and runs, some were in Arkansas. The Hot Springs Rally, the Wilderness Rally, the Toadsuck Rally, etc.. At those little getting gathers, I found out about more little rideinís. I was showing up at all of them. Sitting around the campfires, I started getting the question, when are You guys in Arkansas going to start a BMW club. I was clueless. I think I knew maybe 3 BMW riders total in East Arkansas. They were or had been members of the BMW RAMS in the past, some of the guys were members of southern Missouri clubs. None were interested in starting a new club in Arkansas.

I kept riding to the area BMW rallies. Return to Shiloh, Falling Leaf, Trail of Tears; which were the larger rallies. I also attended the smaller mini rallies, Hot Springs, Wilderness, Missouri State, and a few others, I canít really remember. I kept running into Arkansas riders from all over state, it seemed that central Arkansas around Little Rock and Conway had a good contingent of regular riders. There was a small BMW dealer in Bentonville, so there was a fair amount of riders in northwest Arkansas. Basically it seemed like about 10-15 riders from these 2 areas were the core group.

Branched out a little farther to some smaller little rallies in eastern Oklahoma, northern Mississippi, and a larger rally in Huntsville, Alabama, the Rocket City Rally; famously known as the Great Chicken Rally. Somewhere along the line, attendees, weíre remembering me. Glad to see U Barry, where have been riding? Wow, I wasnít an unknown newbie; cool. I liked riding, rallying, hanging at the campfires.
Kept getting the same question, when are U guys in Arkansas going to start a club? .

Finally the core group in central Arkansas did the deal. They were getting the same question I was. The Founding Five. They handed out flyers at the little mini rallies, weíre starting the club; join the first year and be a founding charter member. I was all in.
