Rally Flyfishing

If you are planning on bringing a rod, there is plenty of great fishing in the area. First, and closest, is Fishing Creek. This creek is PFCB stocked for most of its length, at Grassmere Park approx. 30 miles north of Bloomsburg, close enough for an evening, the East and West branches converge. That's all I know about the creek as I have never fished it.

Further north and east Mehoopany Creek runs 10 miles through State Game Land 57. The best fishing on the upper half, tributaries provide cold water, natives and browns. Fished it this past summer, tons of fun.

To the west is a nice day trip. It is approx. 80 miles to Penns Creek. Near the town of Weikert, Cherry Run enters the creek and from there upstream is a 3.9 mile section of Catch and Release. From Swift Run to Coburn it's All Tackle Trophy Trout. The added bonus is, with a short rod, natives can be taken in Cherry Run. Penns Creek is a wide stream and the scenery you just gotta see. On the downside, if it is a dry summer, the water gets very very thin.

To the south is Clarks Creek. Good access it's entire length and a 2.4 mile Catch and Release Flyfishing Only section. If you want a real challenge this is a good one. Clear water, steep banks, light lines, long leaders and light tippet. That's below the reservoir. Above, it's all of that, narrow and tree lined. Did I mention Copperheads ? Lots of Copperheads. We fished Clarks for a weekend two summers ago, although there were many others on the creek, we left there grinnin'.

If anybody wants to spend a day or evening on a stream, as the Rally nears, plans can be made. If you are more local than I to Bloomsburg and have a favorite creek, tell us about it.

A one or three day tourist license in 2010 was $26.70. Probably will not change. A one day includes all privileges. A three day is not listed that way. I am assuming the difference is the additional cost of a Trout Stamp on the three day. I will check. Trout stamp is $9.70 in 2010.

You can go just south of the Rally gate on Fort McClure Blvd and enjoy an evening by the small dam on Fishing Creek.

There are access places along Fishing Creek, just follow RT 487 north to Orangeville, Stillwater and Benton.

In Benton there is another dam that is local favorite. Or go further up the road to Mill Creek Golf Course, and just across the road from the enterance is a popular small dam.

Bowmans Creek

Further north you have Bowmans Creek, follow the old railroad bed up stream from Noxen go past Stull. This road can be made on a street bike if you don't mind dirt and gravel. Another option to reach Bowmans Creek is pass through Noxen and stay on RT 29 north towards Tunkhannock, you will cross a highway bridge after a long hill and there is a rest area on your left which has an access point. In 2006 we had 4 inches of rain in an hour which flooded this creek and took out a huge hatchery leaving a large trout population in this area. * Be mindful that this is a rattlesnake area and what is more aggressive is our eastern water snake.

Stat,

You're quick !! Beat me to the draw, I was going to post that there is a fly fishing shop in New Ringgold, a good resource for information on the numerous fishing opportunities in the area. Pa is also noted for its classic limestone spring creek trout streams. A link to the state fish commission ------- http://www.fish.state.pa.us/

Yep. The Letort has almost no mayflies or caddis, so the English style patterns in use in the 1930s didn't work. Thus Fox, Shenk, Marianaro, etc. developed terrestrial patterns like the cricket and hopper.

The Letort is VERY challenging. It's tiny but has such a powerful spring flow that there are native browns in there well over ten pounds. It's crystal clear, full of vegetation, and has swirling currents, so a clean drift is difficult. And it's about two miles from my house.

Tourist License

As a follow up, I received an answer to my inquiry to the PFBC, as suspected the One Day Tourist License includes all permits. The Three Day does not.

I would also like to re-emphasize the idea of smallmouth fishing on the Susquehanna or Juniata. That's as much fun with ultralight spinning as flycasting. They've been off a bit the past few years, but it used to be easy to get double digit catches while wading. Even better is renting a canoe from Blue Mountain Outfitters and doing an eight mile float. That's also a nice trip even without fishing.

Good tip on the special regs area of Penn's Creek. I took a 21 inch brown out of there a few years ago. Also interesting are the Yellow Breeches and historic Letort near Carlisle, Fishing Creek near Tylersville, the Little Juniata near Tyrone, and Pine Creek and Kettle Creek to the north.

When you're visiting Fishing Creek near Tylersville, one should always think of Prince Farrington and the glory days of Bootlegging in PA. Local legend has it that President Hoover served Farrington liquor at his Inaugural Ball.
