'77 R80/7 carb leak

BexBmr

Bona fide evildoer
This morning I turned on the petcocks of my R80 and gas poured out the right side carb (this was not just a drip). :banghead This is a first time occurance and very sudden - had no problems on the last ride and no slow leaks or drips leading up to this.

Anyone experienced anything similar or have any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting?

Stuck float. My bike does it once in awhile. The floats have little room in the carbs to move and if they are old, they swell and will stick near the bottom. I usually cure the problem by tapping on the carb lightly with the plastic handle on a screwdriver. I need to order new floats.

Could also be deteriorating fuel lines and bits of debris have prevented the float needle from sealing. Turn the petcocks off, and carefully remove the float bowls, one at a time. Look at the bottom of the bowl for debris. Hold the float up to seal the needle, turn the petcock on, and allow the float to drop a little so the gas can flow a bit, flusing the debris away. Turn the petcock off, replace the bowl, and repeat on the other side.

Kurt has it right........Happens all the time but not just the fuel lines deteriorating. USUALLY it is some crud that gets by the mesh filters on the petcocks. You DO have some kind of inline filter on each fuel line dont you? Most folks put them about an inch or two below the petcock and get excellent results.

Anyway, take off the offending overflowing float bowl. Yes, check it out; but you probably won't see anything, dump the fuel, turn on the petcock and jiggle the float itself a couple of times to allow the jet needle to flush out the grain of sand or whatever. NO big deal...............Happens all the time........Dennis

Yes, I do have the filters. The fuel lines are new - will check for crud tonight....

What BexBmr so adroitly failed to mention was that it would be ME that checked for the crud tonight......

And that's exactly what it was, so thanks for the helpful info.
