Other than some camping on private property "The Buffalo Chip Campground" is where a great many choose to camp out. Do not expect peace and quiet.

He's right. Don't plan on getting any sleep. If you don't already have reservations, I would recommend staying in a nearby town and going in for a day trip. The next time I go, I'm going to stay in Rapid City, do a day thing then head for peace and quiet. Don't forget the ear plugs.

Good Luck,

Camping in the Hills

Easy is right on all counts. I am assuming you mean that you are tent camping. There are any number of campgrounds along I 90 between Rapid City and Sturgis. Some are just a spot and a portapot. I have stayed at the Whispering Pines in the center of the Hills (on 385) has a meadow which is also a spot and a pot with showers 1/4 mile walk. I have stayed at Chris's camp at Spearfish it is nicer but you will need a reservation for sure. I spend most of the summer at the TeePee campground on 16 south of Rapid city. The whole Hills just rumbles 24/14 (that's 2 weeks) Camping just gets disgusting in and near Sturgis.

Ya we know how the big parts are. just thought there may be a BMW camp area in or around Stugis . we are just going to wing it and if we can't find any thing we'll go out a few more miles.

Thanks
Dave

If you take RT 85 SW out of Sturgis threw Deadwood and Lead and continue to and cross the state line into Wy. there's a place called the Flying V Ranch that has camping. we stayed there in 07 and loved it. if you don't need elec the camping is FREE. they do charge $3.00 for a hot shower. just Google them for more info...

Sounds like the place to stay thanks for all the info DAve
