Last Saturday, April 10th, Mid-Atlantic Riders (Club #280) held our monthly club meeting at the 896 Diner in Newark, DE. An after meeting ride had been planned by our club VP, Tracy, and her husband Matt. The ride was dubbed as the "Power to the People Tour - Dam it!" for a very logical reason. We would be crossing the Susquehanna River twice, and we would be visting several dams (hydroelectric power stations) along the way.
Our tour would begin and end at the 896 Diner, and all told cover approximately 144 miles. Box lunches were provided by the club, and we had lunch at a nice riverside park at about the 75 mile mark.
We could not have asked for a better day for a group ride, albeit a little brisk in the morning (low 50's), the afternoon warmed up to the mid-60's. bright sunny day with almost no clouds to be found. We started the ride with 20 riders, and we had a group of 13 remaining at the last stop of the day. The other riders had peeled off at various locations to head for home as they had other business to attend to, some personal, and some business.
All the bikes lined up at the breakfast meeting.
Jim Kauker, our club president for 2009, was given recognition for his service last year. Thanks Jim
Matt reminding us that this is "Power to the People" as we arrived at Conowingo Dam
Conowingo Dam - When completed in 1928 it was the second largest hydroelectric project by power output in the United States, behind only Niagara Falls

Safe Harbor Dam - The dam was completed and closed its gates for the first time on Sept 09, 1931. The first power was generated on Dec 07, 1931 and the last of the original seven turbine generator units came on-line on Oct 14, 1940.
Safe Harbor Dam, like other dams on the river, were designed to allow migratory fish to continue their journey up river to spawn. Safe Habor Dam uses a fish lift.

All in all, it was a great day, and a great club event. We are hoping to have some sort of ride planned after every monthly breakfast meeting...the second saturday of every month. Come join the fun and get the chance to meet some great fellow riders!
