I'm surprised this wasn't posted.

FREE - Sat Morning Seminar - 8AM
01/02/2010 - 01/02/2010

"Why don't they see us?"

David Hough (author and motorcycle guru) is presenting "Why don't they see us?" If you allow another vehicle to knock you down in traffic, the first thing you'll hear after the grinding noises stop is the driver saying, Are you all right? I didn't SEE you. Of course, motorcycles are harder to spot among other, larger vehicles, but there are some real psychological reasons why motorists have selective vision.

We will explore how humans view the surrounding environment, and how a driver judges the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle. We will conclude with suggestions for how a motorcyclist can increase the chances of being noticed by other drivers in traffic.

Join us, but seating is limited and reservations are required, so please call 206-527-5511 x13 to reserve you spot.

More about David:
David Hough is an institution to riders all over the world and particularly here in the NW. Best known for his Proficient Motorcycling books, he has literally saved hundreds of lives by giving motorcyclists the benefit of his decades of research and knowledge presented in a friendly and easy to understand style that makes his knowledge applicable to all. Many riders have come to know him through his seminars at Sport Bike Northwest events and attendance at the annual Seattle International Motorcycle Show. He is also well known for his published articles in Motorcycle Consumer News and BMW Owners News magazines. He has won the Motorcycle Safety Foundations Excellence in Motorcycle Journalism award twice, and was quite recently inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame.

Ride West BMW is proud of our association with David Hough going back many years - and pleased to bring this opportunity to you. Start your New Year off in the best possible way by learning from the best!

Bear in mind the this seminar is to begin Saturday morning at 8am a wee bit early for some so get your beauty rest and come in and join us.

David Hough will be introduced by David Preston, our new Manager of Team Ride West and he will be available to tell you what that will be all about as well. Happy Holidays!

Then you still have a chance... May 14-15 at the Treasures of Yosemite Ride clicky.

David has kindly agreed to attend the rally and will be speaking over two nights about his work and about motorcycle riding in general. He also wants to make the trip into the Yosemite Valley and take in the sights...

You want a chance to meet the man?
Been into the Yosemite National Park lately?
Would you like to meet a large group of like minded BMW riders?

This rally is shaping up to be one of the west coasts finest gatherings... and Mr. Hough will be a big part of it.

Here are some shots from the mornings talk.
Well worth the 8AM start time.

The 8AM Crowd.

If you see yourself let me know.

Few more here.

Dang! I barely got home to see the report and pics already posted. I enjoyed doing the seminar, and considering the response, I intend to do more of them in the future.

I'm impressed that so many obviously experienced and knowledgable riders would get out of bed on the 2nd of January, and get over to Ride West by 8a. All the chairs were full, and more arrived to stand in the back. I might add that more than a few rode their bikes and hacks to the event.

For those on the east side of the state or in Idaho, I'll be at the Spokane motorcycle show on February 19 - 20- 21.

And, I'm already on the calendar for a "Surviving The Backroads" seminar at Ride West on Saturday March 6--but at the more leisurely time of 10a. Hey, I have a three-hour commute to get there myself.

In addition to the Treasures of Yosemite rally May 13 - 15, I am planning on attending the BMWMOA International rally at Redmond OR July 15 - 17, once more doing "coffee (and bananas) with Dave" Friday and Saturday mornings. I'm also planning on assisting with camp GEARS the two days before the rally.

I had been thinking about just relaxing at the MOA rally, but if you would like me to do some seminars there, just name the topics and I'll submit the proposal to the seminar bigwigs. I have a number of PowerPoint pitches available, and I'm always developing others.

Tom Mehren has me on the calendar to do seminars at the SoundRider! rally week in the Gorge (Columbia River Gorge between WA and OR, that is) July 29 - 31. Details: www.soundrider.com

I must add that I am constantly impressed with the high level of commitment and curiosity demonstrated by BMW riders. This event at Ride West underscored my impression!

Riding to Spokane? Are you doing all 3 days?
Inquiring minds wanna know!

WHOOPS!

I won't be at the Spokane show after all. Apparently, the dates I had agreed to weren't correct. I've been told that the correct show dates are Feb 12-13-14. And I have a conflict for that weekend, so I can't be there. However, Tom Mehren says he has arranged for Bret Tkacs to be there. Bret runs Puget Sound Safety in the Tacoma/Olympia area.

Sorry about this.

D'oh!

Glad I asked! :laugh

Looks like I'm riding over to P.A. to get my new autographed :deal updated copy of "Driving a Sidecar Outfit".

I'm on the calendar again at Ride West on Saturday, March 6. I believe we're scheduled for 10a, but if you're interested in joining us, call to check.

I'll be doing a seminar on "Surviving The Backroads" in which we'll consider some issues such as traffic, getting through corners, situational awareness, controlling speed to sight distance, smoother shifting, and planning now for what to do when something breaks or you crash on some lonely road.

As at the December seminar, I'll bring along some copies of Proficient Motorcycling to hawk; autographs are free.

The seminar at Ride West went well, IMHO. We had about 40 participants, and I did the whole 90-minute pitch. Kudos to Dave Swezey at Ride West for setting up the skills seminars, and for the participants to sit inside on a sunny Saturday that would have been great for riding.

I'm thinking about repeating the "Surviving The Backroads" seminar during the Redmond rally. Let me know if you're interested.
