Radar Detector

Speeding makes things (bad things in particular) happen faster and at a greater intensity. Speed is also a problem when others on the public highway do a mental calculation as to whether or not to merge/turn left based on thinking that YOU are within reasonable tolerance of the speed limit. If you are substantially over the limit, those merging/turning left most likely will miscalculate the closing rate which very likely will cause you serious physical harm.

Traffic radar operation and it's avoidance require considerable understanding and applied technique. The two principal posters Greenberg and deilenberger have presented a wealth of info.

Au contraire! The last speeding ticket I got was by stopwatch from an overpass in Colorado back when the I-70 speed limit was still 55 prior to 1995. The kind officer even let Voni take his picture handing me my ticket. Never by airplane, never in California, and not within memory by radar. I usually don't speed.

But I do expect sworn public officials to be honest and tell the truth. I know that seems a lot to ask in at least some cases, but .....

Realistically, a laser beam is too narrow to pick up if his the car in front of you and when it gets you, you are caught. It tells the officer speed and distance instantly.

A radar detector will save your bacon only when the radar in the car or bike is in moving mode (broadcasting constantly). A radar gun is instant on so unless the officer pulls the trigger on the car closely in front of you, you are caught.

If you listen to the truckers on the CB, they will let you know where the cops are for miles.

In my earlier career, I gave out my share of speeding citations.

Expensive speed detector

I have a pretty good friend who rides a lot. If I mention his name, it's likely you've heard it.

Years ago, in a telephone conversation, I asked him if he'd considered riding with a radar detector?

His reply: "I always do. It's just that mine comes with flashing lights and a siren."
