A number of model updates will be integrated in the BMW Motorrad program for the model year 2013.The models will be available for order in the new configuration at all BMW Motorrad dealerships from August 2012.

BMW Motorrad ABS available as standard in all models worldwide.
As a leading motorcycle manufacturer, BMW Motorrad has always been aware of its social responsibility in connection with motorcycling safety. In 1988 the company presented the world's first serial production motorcycles with the antilock brake system ABS - the most effective technical safety bonus to this day. Now follows the next logical step: as of the model year 2013, BMW Motorrad will be the first manufacturer in the world to provide ABS in all models as standard. This is a proactive step, clearly pre-empting the requirement for ABS which is likely to be introduced in 2016 for all newly registered motorcycles in Europe.

BMW F 800 R.
From model year 2013 the BMW F 800 R is available in the following new paint finishes:
Racing blue metallic/Alpine white
Sapphire black metallic

The following paint finishes are no longer available: Alpine*white/Black*satin*gloss, Magma red/White aluminium metallic matt.

BMW F 800 R Dynamic package.
In the Dynamic package, BMW Motorrad offers a combination of options and special accessories which underline the dynamic flair of the BMW F 800 R even more strikingly. The package comprises:

Engine spoiler
LED rear light
LED turn indicators
Pillion seat cover

The Dynamic package is available for the F 800 R from August in conjunction with a new vehicle order. The package price in Germany is € 295.- incl. 19 % VAT (price saving € 138.-).

BMW F 800 R Touring package.
The ideal package motorcyclists who love to travel, the new Touring package for the F 800 R focuses on ride comfort and touring capability. The package comprises:

Heated grips
On-board computer
Socket
Luggage rack
Pannier holder
Centre stand

The Touring package is available for the BMW F 800 R from August in conjunction with a new vehicle order. The package price in Germany is € 495.- incl. 19 % VAT (price saving € 215.-).

BMW G 650 GS.
From model year 2013 the BMW G 650 GS is available in the following new paint finish:
Sunset yellow

The paint finish Orange red is no longer available.

BMW R 1200 R.
From model year 2013 the BMW R 1200 R is available in the following new paint finishes:
Montego blue metallic

Magnesium beige metallic

The paint finishes Red apple metallic and Smoke grey metallic are no longer available.

BMW S 1000 RR.
From model year 2013 the BMW S 1000 RR is available in the following new paint finish:
Granite grey metallic matt

The paint finish Bluefire is no longer available.

BMW K 1300 S.
From model year 2013 the BMW K 1300 S is available in the following new paint finish:
Sapphire black metallic/Dark graphite metallic

The paint finish Magma red/Sapphire black metallic is no longer available.

BMW K 1300 R.
From model year 2013 the BMW K 1300 R is available in the following new paint finishes:
Racing red/Sapphire Black metallic
Sapphire black metallic/Black satin gloss

The paint finishes Ostra grey metallic matt/Sapphire black metallic, Light grey metallic and Black satin gloss/Granite grey metallic matt are no longer available.
The sports wheels previously available as an optional extra are now included in the range of standard fittings. The Dynamic package of the K 1300 R therefore no longer includes them. The latter thus comprises heated grips, on-board computer, LED turn indicators, the Sport windshield, Electronic Suspension Adjustment ESA II and the shift assistant. The package price has been adjusted downwards accordingly and is now € 890.- (previously € 1,000.-; price valid for the German market).

- More units than BMW/ Husqvarna sells in a year and this was a down month for them. The relationship between BMW and TVS remains very much in doubt. The value they may offer to BMW is assembly CKD bikes, along the lines BMW has in Brazil, allowing them to avoid the heavy tariffs currently paid on complete bikes. The TVS dealer network could be a means to introduce BMW products on a much broader basis. Husqvarna is most likely product they will focus on. The current Husqvarna production facility has excess capacity that could absorb a great deal of CKD bikes to ship to India.

There is many a slip between cup and lip so time will tell if and what all these stories mean.

Munich, 16th July 2012. BMW Motorrad will also line up a factory team at the start of the FIM Superbike World Championship in 2013. At the same time, the company is carrying out a strategic realignment and pooling superbike activities.

BMW Motorrad Italia will take responsibility for the factory race and test team as well as for chassis development. BMW in Munich will be entirely responsible for developing the power train and electronics. This decision means that BMW Motorrad will continue to operate as a fully integrated team in the World Championship for near-production road motorcycles. Team name, team management positions and rider line-up for 2013 will be announced later.

Stephan Schaller, Head of BMW Motorrad, said: “Our decision represents a commitment by BMW Motorrad to motor sports. We have developed this commitment from a position of strength. The Superbike World Championship will continue to be the right platform for BMW Motorrad next year to demonstrate our expertise as a manufacturer of sports motorcycles in close proximity to customers. The new structure with the focus on one racing team is lean and efficient, the concept is targeted and logical. We are looking forward to being in a position to develop the existing structures in Munich and Milan.”

Schaller added: “At this point, I would like to express my thanks to Bernhard Gobmeier who successfully restructured BMW Motorrad Motorsport and achieved the first victories in the Superbike World Championship. I am confident that he and his team will have celebrated more victories by the end of the season. Naturally, our decision will also exert an influence on our partnership with alpha Racing. We have celebrated successes together and moved the team forward. We have a number of challenges ahead for the rest of the season and we will be working with alpha Racing to master them in a dedicated and professional approach.”

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Bernhard Gobmeier: “This is a strategic corporate decision by BMW Motorrad. This step means that BMW Motorrad will continue to participate in motor sports at a professional level. During the current season, we have achieved the first victories for BMW Motorrad in the Superbike World Championship. I am confident that more victories will follow. Andrea Buzzoni, Director of BMW Motorrad Italia, said: “Success in professional motor sports depends on perfect interplay of all the different factors – from the rider, through the team and technology, to the tyres. Furthermore, a sustainable business case is becoming increasingly important. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to realign its activities in the World Championship. We would like to express our thanks for the confidence they have demonstrated and we look forward to performing our new function. The successes in this season show that the development work carried out has borne fruit. The BMW S 1000 RR is capable of achieving victories in the Superbike World Championship. This has been the achievement of Bernhard Gobmeier and his team. We will build on this platform in 2013.”

FWIW
During the 2011 season the German and Italian teams were not integrated. Each took their version of the S1000RR v1 and developed in their directions. Over the length of the season some integration of information and effort took place. The main difference, based on comments by Troy Corser, was electronics development. Corser expressed frustration that the engineer he saw as key to the development of his bike had been assigned to BMW Itallia and was further separated by a strong Chinese wall. In 2012 both teams used the same equipment, the S1000RR v2, to launch their seasons.

The press release outlines a straight forward division of labor for the teams in 2013. Using BMW Itallia as the testing and chassis developer makes a great deal of sense; at least to me. This team campaings both in SBK and STK1000. Given the teams budget and resources available the role of testing and chassis development seems a good fit. Engine and electronics development residing in Munich seems more than sensible.

The press release is straight forward in what it says, yet for this fan it creates more questions than it answers.

Within WSBK how does the new structure play out in the real world once lifted off the page? IS this a two team four bike operation or a one team operation? The press release indicates the former but on 2013 race weekends how will this play out?

What does centering engine and electronic development in Munich mean for BMW and MotoGP? The Mothership has made it clear it does not want to field a factory team under the current rules. BMW and Suter a fielding a CRT machine that has frustrated Edwards. Frustration has lead to discussion of his team heading to Honda for a bike to campaign. Will shifting to a primary engine/electronics focus for Munich allow them to piggy back CRT power train development using Suter as the chassis developer for the near future? This would mirror the SBK strategy while allowing BMW to develop much needed track data for a factory team if and when they see more favorable rules/budget in MotoGP.

As always all this and a buck still gets you coffee and change at the Official Fly-Over-Land coffee stop. The key take away from the press release is the gang and I will have much to talk about through the 2013 season.

FWIW: Some more thoughts on

BMW Motorrad realigns motor sports activities: commitment to the Superbike World Championship 2013.

BMW Motorcycle Magazine's headline starts “BMW Kills WSBK Team...”. GPOne's initial analysis reads more like an obituary. Their detailed blog analysis reads like the player option book for day two of the NFL draft. Many express surprise and shock at the move. After several reads of the press release and reading many of these articles I am less inclined to chant: 'der K?Ânig is dead long live il Re'. In this post Paris to Dakar – Boxer Cup era of BMW racing, on reflection, it is the latest iteration of business as usual for Roundel Racing.

Racing is dirty business
BMW's current return to professional level FIM racing began in the dirt with the G450. The little BMW as part of the BMW reorganization that took place in the first years of the new millennium. Coincidentally MV Agusta and its divisions were up for sale. This lead to a bankruptcy and reorganization for them. About the same time the G450 began to surface in public BMW purchased Husqvarna. The G450 was briefly campaigned by BMW with the assistance of Speed Brain then both were rolled into Husqvarna. Husqvarna would do BMW's fighting in the dirt.

Racing takes endurance
At the same time the G450 was passing through its racing arc BMW announced it would enter World Superbike. In anticipation of this BMW unveiled the R1200 HP Sport and took it racing in the FIM Endurance racing series. The HP was the high performance twin option BMW had considered taking to SBK. It became the platform to do preliminary testing of fairing aerodynamics and production techniques it would use with S1000RR. Alpha Racing and their racing experience were brought in to organize and run the team with BMW supervision. The Endurance team did not end with the WSBK start. BMW France took over endurance racing for BMW and moved from the HP to S1000RR in time.

Carving the SBK curves
Team BMW Motorrad started carving out its niche in World Superbike in 2009 with the S1000RR. The first year was definitely a teething year. 2010 saw progress in the SBK campaign and the addition of BMW Itallia running the expansion into STK1000. Progress for the German team and a rider and manufacturer championship for the STK first time out of the box. 2011 saw the addition of new riders and the expansion of BMW Itallia into the SBK arena. If you have followed this thread you are aware of SBK efforts of the German and Italian teams. If you were aware of the G450 and Endurance story lines the timing of the WSBK realignment press release may come as a surprise but should not be a shock. How the realignment plays out in the paddock may be another surprise. The dominate press interpretation of the release has two riders disappearing. The release describes a division of labor between Germany and Italy and clearly hints at a decrease in team management overhead. It leaves question of who will be in the paddock in 2013. Rumors of an Italian dream team are rife. But is that a two three or four rider team.

Where is the Mothership headed next?
The short answer is I don't know. I have been paying attention to the spate of press releases and stories involving BMW Motorrad of late and have my own ideas.

The reorganization press release has several interesting lines.

...a sustainable business case is becoming increasingly important. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to realign its activities in the World Championship. ...

BMW went racing with the G450 and the S1000RR to open new markets to sell in. The former resulted in a new company becoming part of the operation. The latter gave BMW a world beater in the show room if not yet on the track.

...BMW in Munich will be entirely responsible for developing the power train and electronics...

The Mothership is returning to its roots. The company began as an engine builder. In the starting days these were aircraft engines. In this case they will be building racing engines for World Superbike and the other racing efforts. The 'other' efforts will be the focus on much speculation until the next press release on this from Munich. I have two projects in mind for them.

If I were the Benevolent Dictator of Roundel Racing [BDRR]

CRT
The heads of BMW have made it clear it is not interested in joining the ranks of full factory MotoGP efforts. The current participants are to far ahead to catch up in any reasonable time. Honda and Yamaha are fighting hard to protect that lead. Suter-BMW has waved, okay shook the CRT flag for BMW. Haslam has spent some time in the Suter-BMW paddock in the early days of the 2012 pre season. If the SBK side goes to an Italian dream team format could Haslam move his contract to a rejuvenated CRT ride?

As BDRR I would find a true independent racing sponsor to form a team, maintain the Alpha Racing connection to run it, continue with Suter as a chassis developer and be an engine developer/supplier to them and other CRT teams. This strategy has all sorts of draw backs but two key points of interest.
1. Similar to the endurance racing effort this would allow BMW to develop the basis for a factory team while gathering much needed data in the process.
2. The CRT class bike engines are intended to be prototype liter engines not SBK mills. This would give a racing presence and arena to develop the power plant for the S1000RR.
The press continues to make this more and more appealing by reporting the factory team results and the CRT standings.

Moto3
The street side of the Motorrad segment is in talks to move into India. KTM is using their Moto3 effort to great effect in their expansion in that market. I would turn to Husqvarna to lead my Moto3 campaign. The effort would give the sporting panache to match KTM, Honda and Kawasaki in the performance 250 segment. The size allows for conceptual economies with the CRT engine.

As always these thoughts and a buck will get you a cup of coffee at the Fly-Over-Land coffee shop where I will be waiting for the next developments in the Roundel Racing story and or a call from Munich to inform me of my new job as BDRR for BMW.

The coming race weekend should be an very exciting one. Unfortunately I must miss it and put the thread on hold. A family emergency has come up and I will be leaving latter today to help with it. I will be gone for several days.

Great report and we'll miss you. I can only hope your family emergency is better than mine.

Monday early AM I took a morning pill I am supposed to down with 16 OZ if water, and after first sip could not breathe, choking and coughing up. Three days at the hospital and a lot of steroids my throat, half thyroid as May 7, 2012, and trachea, food tube, is down enough, I am relearning how to eat without choking and its not working yet!

I am exhausted after an eat, choke, eat, choke, 2 hour breakfast ordeal, and see my Dr. @ 2:30 today. This is as a) a result of several infections of the area, including three doses of antibiotics or b) a heart artery that may require moving.

I am only 55 and this thyroid thing may kill me yet. I am not hoping for this, but it hurts a lot. That my heart is great, I am nearly 6' and 180 lbs is not relevant.

Like I said, I hope your family emergency is less serious.
