Reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Casey Stoner confirmed on Thursday that he would retire from the sport at the end of the 2012 season.

The Repsol Honda rider addressed the media at the start of the official pre-event press conference for the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France, making a short statement in which he outlined the reasons behind his decision.

“After a long time thinking, a lot of time talking with my family and my wife, this has been coming for a couple of years now but at the end of this 2012 season I will be not racing in the 2013 Championship. I will be finishing my career at the end of this season in MotoGP, and go forward in different things in my life,” Stoner told the assembled press.

“After so many years of doing this sport which I love, and which myself and my family made so many sacrifices for, after so many years of trying to get to where we have gotten to at this point, this sport has changed a lot and it has changed to the point where I am not enjoying it. I don't have the passion for it and so at this time it's better if I retire now.

“There are a lot of things that have disappointed me, and also a lot of things I have loved about this sport, but unfortunately the balance has gone in the wrong direction. And so, basically, we won't be continuing any more. It would be nice if I could say I would stay one more year, but then where does it stop? So we decided to finish everything as we are now.”

Stoner, who won the 2007 MotoGP™ with Ducati and the 2011 crown with Honda, currently leads the 2012 standings by a single point ahead of Jorge Lorenzo heading into this weekend's fourth round.

FWIW:

As the MotoGP CRT decision rolled out Casey Stoner was very vocal about his displeasure. He would quit before he would ride one. He continued his campaign against the class expressing safety concerns for the factory riders with the slower CRT machines on track. He has threatened to leave just on that basis alone.

While winning 2011 he expressed great displeasure with how he felt he was treated during the season by track officials. In several cases he felt he had been held back or not aided back into the race as other riders were. It was increasing clear as he closed in on the title it would be taken from a governing body he had declining respect for.

Stoner has had any number of health concerns for the last couple seasons. Quiet speculation has been around about how much longer he would physical want or be able to compete at the level of performance he demanded of himself. The death of Claudio Simoncillie had a huge impact on all riders in the series. The racing incident and death hung over all aspects of the remaining MotoGP season. This combination of issues would have no doubt had great impact on his decision as he talked the idea over with his family.

We were reminded last weekend the possible changes going into the last corner of a race can bring. Careers, like races, not over until the chequered flag actually falls. Stoner could change his mind but I would be surprised.

Well -- he's the one who said it. From today's "The Australian" newspaper:

AUSTRALIA'S two-time world motorcycling champion Casey Stoner has stunned the sport by announcing he will quit at the end of the season for "family reasons".
The 26-year-old, who has won 35 MotoGP races in his career and leads the current standings after winning two of the season's three events, made his announcement at a news conference ahead of Sunday's French Grand Prix.

ÔÇ£After a long period of thought and numerous discussions with my wife and family, I have decided to stop competing at the end of the season,ÔÇØ said Honda's defending champion.

ÔÇ£After so many years taking part in this sport that I love, and with all the sacrifices that I have had to make, I no longer have the passion to continue and I think that it is best to stop.ÔÇØ

Stoner, who also won the world title in 2007 with Ducati, became a father for the first time in February when his wife Adrianna gave birth to a baby daughter.

.At the time he shrugged off suggestions that fatherhood would dampen his love of motorcycling.

ÔÇ£They say you slow down when you get married, but in my first year of marriage I won the title,ÔÇØ said Stoner on the eve of the season.

ÔÇ£When I found out we were having a baby, I won it a second time. I don't think that's the case (that you slow down).ÔÇØ
 
If he said it and it's printed then i guess it's a done deal.

He was a pretty good champion of the sport , but times have changed and he is obviously not willing to change with them.

I always thought he was a good and clean rider , but more than a bit of a whiner. From what I have read he would not train and improve his physical conditioning, so his talent may have become irrelevant at the end of the day. No slam on him, but you need to be fit to fight.

He will take his millions and go back to OZ then do what ever those blokes do involving sheep :blush

When the first attempt at preparing the Miller Motorsports Park round of the Manufacturer Championship standings was complete I realized I didn't like anyone to win. I pigeon holed my notes for a couple of days and took another run at the overview.

Ducati 161.5 pts.
Ducati continues to lead the championship coming into this round. If your a betting man this is the manufacturer to put your money on. In 8 races at MMP since 2008 Ducati has taken 9 of the 24 podium positions available. It took all three podium steps for Race 1 for 2011 and has only failed to put a bike on the podium in one race during that run. Checa is number two in the Ride Championship and has 5 podiums under his belt with Ducati and Honda. Ducati riders should be considered strong favorites based on this but they are are my dark horse for the weekend. The track map is a nice combination of squiggly and straight lines that Ducatis normally thrive on. The altitude is the factor that I think will make the difference. Yes all the bikes will be impacted but on a relative scale I think they will be down just a bit too much to be at the front. Checa and Guintoli should be in striking range should people become over zealous up front but not close enough to take a podium on their own.

Aprilia 139 pts.
Biaggi took the double in 2010 on the way to his Rider Championship. In 2011 failed to score a point in Race 1 and was on step three just below teammate Camier. Biaggi comes into the weekend leading the Rider Championship and should help his cause. I believe he will take a podium step in each race and the top spot in at least one. He has not been brilliant this year with only one win and two seconds but the Aprilia should be in its element this weekend .

BMW 131 pts.
BMW has arrived. If Vince Lombardi were a team manager he would be spouting about how the S1000RRv2 and his team of riders has the ability to win on any Sunday...if they don't defeat themselves. I would believe him and that has nothing to do with the Packer flag hanging on the wall above my desk. The v2 has arrived and should be a contender in any race for the remainder of the season. Then why, as a BMW fan, do I feel like jumping out of a basement window when I see MMP on the schedule?

The v1 did not like MMP. The track surface is considered quit good but the v1 destroyed tyres on it. When riders were able to duel in the first half they would find themselves nursing the big round black doughnuts for the second half of the races.

When tyres were the problem the fairing would be blamed. The S is a wind tunnel baby. Wind tunnels are great for straight line aerodynamics; however, road racing is done on tracks with squiggly lines. These are normally dealt with by other laws of physics as riders lay their bikes over in the corners. Normally, yes; except for the S in the wind. In several practice sessions and more importantly races there have been winds that have raised havoc with the v1's handling in a quartering wind. The bike would layover/standup in a predictable fashion. The riders would have to slow down. This does not win races. I was feeling good about the v2 until the Friday sessions at Donington. The winds were strong and Marco Melandri was doing his Troy Corser imitation as he complained about how the bike dealt with the winds. The weather forecast is for strong winds and rain on Saturday. Sunday is damp again but the winds should be lower for Superpole. This could impact what row the Roundel teams line up on for the Monday races held in sunny and calm conditions.

Because the kids didn't play nice in race two at Donington they are under the gun to perform once again this weekend just hold their position in the standings. On any Sunday, in the case of MMP any Monday, the v2 and its riders have found the potential to win. They have the potential. I am staying away from basement windows and will be very pleased with a solid podium finish or two.

The Italian team must put out this weekend. Podium polygamy is legal in Utah.

Kawasaki 129.5 pts.
The latest version of the big green machine with Sykes on board managed a P6 and P10 last year. This year I see them dueling with Biaggi's Aprilia for P1. The Z's engine power is on a par with musclular Aprilia and BMW. The team appears to have sorted out the chassis with one lingering question mark. Tyre management remains the Achilles heal of this bike in certain conditions. Sykes is able to charge hard at the beginning of races but fades as they go along. MMP is a wonderful track surface but sand and salt can eat up tyres. Kawasaki has had better results over the season but BMW and their season development curve are very similar. The one place they have been weaker is tyre management.

Honda 112 pts.
MMP has not been kind to Honda. Checa, riding for big red then, took the double in 2008 and a P2 in 2009 Race 1. After that it has been a struggle to be in the top ten. Last year they weren't in either race. Despite snagging the joy of victory from BMW's agony of defeat in Donington Race 2, I don't look for much joy in the Honda paddock. I don't think they have the chops to make their way through the lurking Ducatis and get to the podium.

Suzuki 40.5 pts
MMP has been marginally better for the diminutive Suzuki effort. In 2010 Haslam riding for for Suzuki came into the weekend in the lead for the Rider Championship. It took a P2 in Race 1 but posted a RET for Race 2 yielding the Championship lead to Biaggi the eventual 2010 champ. John Hopkins makes a return to SBK once again for Suzuki. Camier is the one on the team to watch. He and his bike have been quietly sorting things out. Riding for Aprilia last year he was able to notch a P5 and P2 finsihing ahead of then teammate Biaggi both races. Honda will be trying to figure out how to get through the Ducatis blocking the way to the front. They will have to pass Camier and his Suzuki too. Where he puts his bike on the grid compared to the Ducati hordes will make all the difference when the lights go green.

worldsbk.com: Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) posted a brave and committed lap time of 2'02.138 to take the top spot in the first free practice session at a fully wet Miller Motorsports Park today, ending up over two seconds ahead of the next quickest rider, Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport).

In truly atrocious conditions at this fast circuit Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) scored third place with Italian rider Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet) fourth.

World Champion and Miller favourite Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) went fifth. The first official practice session takes place later this afternoon.

worldsbk.com: Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) pushed as hard in dry conditions as he had in the wet free practice session this morning to take the overnight fastest lap time of 1 minute 49.842 seconds. A good day for the Ducati riders saw Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) go second, heading up the BMW Motorrad Motorsport machine of Marco Melandri and the Aprilia Racing entry of Max Biaggi. Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing) and Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing) continued the good Ducati form in going fifth and sixth respectively. This year's qualifying pacesetter Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) crashed out during the session and was only ninth.

FWIW:
Qualifying 1 weather was much improved and thus so were the times. The temps were in the upper 50s F and winds in the 15 mph range.

Early on Melandri and Haslam traded times with the Ducatis. At the thirty minute remaining mark the team seemed to split strategies. Melandri continued to be competitive finishing in P4. Haslam went from P5 at the time to finishing the session in P12. Was he having a off session or did he fell secure enough to work on race day set up. I suspect the latter.

I certainly hope Fabrizio and Badovini were working on race day setup. At 30 minutes remaining Badovini was in P9 and Fabrizio in P16. They would finish this session in P13 for Fabrizio and 14 for Badovini. This finish would allow them to advance to Superpole 1 but there was no sense in their performance that they we ready to advance to the second session let alone compete in the third.

During the latter parts of the session Sykes popped a fast lap to take P1 only to crash on his thirteenth lap. He would make it back to the pits. I have no information on his condition. He would finish the session in P9.

I spent most of the session wondering what was up with Aprilia. I expected them to have a strong weekend. Biaggi's P20 in Free Practice did not surprise me given the weather. I was scratching my head at the 30 minute mark when Biaggi was barely able to scratch out a P10 for the then best for Aprilia. Davies broke through to P3 then Laverty bested him. The Aprilias began to show a bit of promise but not in Biaggi's hands. At the one minute mark Biaggi was back on the track tires warmed up and turned in a P4 performance. Did he spend most of the session working on his race set up?

The weather forecast for Sunday has a 40% chance of rain., temps in the mid 60s F and over 15mph. What it is like at Superpole will make all the difference in how the race turns out on Monday. The weather forecast for Monday has a big sun, nice temps and low winds – Good Racing Weather.
