BMW Group sales record best-ever March and first quarter
    1BMW Group PressClub Global / 20h
254,862 vehicles delivered worldwide in March, up 5.9% +++ BMW sales increase 5.3%, totalling 212,093 +++ MINI sales grow 8.7% to 42,447 +++ BMW Group sales in first quarter up 5.3% to 587,237 +++ More than half a million

FWIW While these appear to be good numbers for BMW AG I am not certain your local dealer is celebrating yet. WIthout numbers from key markets to drill down into we can not be certain how they numbers piled up at the corporate level. Keep in mind during 2016 the company had a record motorrad sales year and yet the N.A. market was down significantly. We have not seen official numbers for the US. Normally that is not a good sign for dealers or records. In a recent article re-published on the site Australian sales were down for the first quarter. Are they the down under canary in the motorcycle sales coal mine?

Spy Shots: REVEALED! BMW’s 2018 F900GS caught out in finished trim
    3MoreBikes / 5h
Here’s the latest spy shots of BMW’s next-gen middleweight GS – the F900. The bike, due to enter the range as the top-of-the-range for the middleweight Adventure machines with familiar but sharper styling, an all-new aluminium

European magazines suggest an EIMCA release for the new GS. The 900cc engine is not just a bore and stroke job. Rather, it is rumored to be a more compact vertical twin generating between 90 and 110 horsepower. The changes in dimensions called for a new frame. All of this is shod with a new suspension.

India 2nd fastest growing market for passenger vehicles globally

FWIW The resurgence of India auto sales may be the big motorcycle industry story of 2017. Before the bust subcontinent auto sales were on the rise at the cost of motorcycle sales. The ripple effect was to take away profits for the UJM big four and their India joint venture partners. The crash sent customers back to the two wheeled market when they could not afford four.

Back to 2017 and increased auto sales could have a similar effect. This comes on the heels of a motorcycle market still sorting itself out from the India government's monetary policy. Sales in the motorcycle segment were heavily weighted to cash transactions. As cash sales of used bikes slowed down the nock effect was to slow down showroom transactions for dealers.
As the economy improves and buyers and sellers sort out the monetary exchange/tax issues four wheels may become ever more interesting.

Tuck this into file in the back of your mind and retrieve it next year during annual report season. With the exception of Ducati every motorcycle manufacturer has some sort of CKD, joint venture or plant opening up in India with the goal of increasing their worldwide sales to offset soft home markets. The shift from two to four wheels may show up in the reports to explain to investors why companies did not hit the targets they hoped for. That or, you will be scratching your head a year from now and trying to remember what Mika was babbling about around Easter/Pass Over the year before.

    The Final Mile

The final mile is a colloquial phrase used widely, in the telecommunications, cable television and internet industries, to refer to the final leg of the networks that deliver services to retail end-users (customers). Think of that link of cable between your home and the trench with the fiber optic cable out in the street. The last mile is a phrase that pops up in logistics terms. Heck, Gordon Ramsey and your wife or mother are familiar with the final mile. For them it is the distance from the kitchen where that perfectly prepared meal is put together and the dinner table where it will be consumed. Network designers, of all ilks, continue to build and refine ever more robust networks. End users do the same. Yet, any system analyst, from major IT corporation to Mom, will tell you the majority of their problems and system failures come in the final mile. This is the first in a series of articles to argue system life is the same for motorcyclist. Our serious problems and system failures come in the final mile.

In Motorrad terms, my working definition for the final mile is the time, space and events between the separate from motorcycle and where and when we come to rest. This is where the motorcycling communities most serious problems occur. The WHO, FIA, Global Road Safety Organization, and the World Bank have put out a report on their research into what is and should be in the final mile.

Click here to download a PDF of the report.

At first blush the credits do not appear to include a two or three wheeled voice. At this level the FIA acted in concert with the FIM, motorcycle and auto manufacturer associations to provide that voice.

The “Powered two- and three-wheeler safety” report is part of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety which commenced in 2010. It includes discussions of proven methods to increase safety and makes a number of suggestions from a global perspective. Some suggestions would be more easily adapted in country with a heavy scooter class of riders. Others are universal in nature.

The challenge for the motorcycling community at large is now bringing that two/three wheeled voice to a local level as national governments set infrastructure budgets and local branches identify and do the work.

VW Might Sell Ducati As Dieselgate Chips Away At Its Brand Empire: Report
    Lanesplitter / by Kristen Lee / 8min
Volkswagen could be considering selling Ducati in the wake of its very screwed up and very expensive Dieselgate scandal. Read more...
FWIW I continue to believe the rumors are overblown; not unfounded but over blown.

While the financial demands of Dieselgate can seem daunting they are being addressed. Whatever the reason VW Group purchased Ducati they have developed the brand expanding sales and worldwide product reach.

What is being missed in all the analysis I have read is an acknowledgement that VW Group is in the process of setting a new direction and getting on with business. In this process all segments of the business are under review. Bringing in an investment banking company such as Evercore could indicate a sale. Given the increases, it could equally mean management is seeking an independent valuation of Ducati to properly represent it on their books. In turn using that increased value, if it is bookable, could be used to secure loans to pay off Dieselgate debt. The increasing and ongoing revenues from the company would help fund the research into EVs and other products.

Is it possible? Yes. I just do not see it in the near term. Three to five years from now, perhaps.

    Duc Tales

April 24th, Reuters ran a small business piece about VW, Ducati and Evercore Investment Bankers. Straightforward reporting in the style Reuters is known for had just enough of hint of speculative analysis had many wondering out loud if Ducati might be up for sale.

I remain in the “it's not for sale” column but want to add “yet” as a fudge caveat. Having done that I want to ask what I think is the key question no one is asking. What is the potential impact on racing?

    Dieselgate Scandal and Sell

The case for a sale is simple. VW continues to reel from the Dieselgate Scandal. Analysts see the need for a cash influx as the last of the fines and penalties come rolling in for payment. Ducati is doing well and so would fetch a nice price to help pay those bills. Or, in alternate scenarios the sale revenue would help fund development of an EV, an area VW has been lagging in.

Dieselgate has filled the auto headlines for almost two years and cost billions of dollars so far, and will continue to impact the company going forward. Therefore bringing a group like Evercore into the equations can mean only one thing; a sale. Investment banking groups often value companies, broker sales and provides bridge loans to make large deals, such as the sale of a company like Ducati, work. The VW Group would have the residual from the sale to spend on Dieselgate payments or funding EV development.

    Who would buy Ducati
    Many names have been floated.

    The UJM Four
Japanese buyers have been suggested and the idea dismissed at the same time. They certainly have the industry background and financial ability to do the purchase. The major question is why would they? The overlap of products and markets offers little hope for blue sky for either buyer or seller. It could be argued a potential UJM buyer would benefit more from the coopertition of a vital Ducati.

The US is Ducati’s largest market. Polaris has the cash and is looking to grow its empire. I have to agree that on first blush Ducati would offer a good complement to Polaris’s Indian Motorcycle line. They share price niches and racing histories and there is little or no product overlap.

Back of the house issues could scupper the deal. Polaris is in the midst of dealing with the closing of Victory. Dealer issues exist. Plant closings/retasking are in process. Would Polaris want to take on a new set of dealer issues and more importantly take over production of a European based motorcycle?

International sales is the final item that could strain a Polaris purchase. An international push began with Victory and has continued with and as they developed Indian Motorcycles. Merging the two strategies is far from impossible; yet, would be another complex issue to consider.

The Indian manufacturer’s name was raised. Hero had a working relationship with Honda in the past which was often described as strained. They did learn a great deal from their Japanese partner about the manufacturing process, quality control and more.

Ducati has revised its plans for the near east and the subcontinent. Originally the plan was to avoid a real sales effort and ship motorcycles manufactured in the EU and suffer the tariff. Now the plan is to build bikes Thailand for India. This expands Ducati’s product line for the country by at least five models. This could be of interest to Hero as the products would complement and expand their current line.

Would a company like Hero be a candidate to follow in tracks looking like those of the Baja/KTM deal?

Ducati and the $1.12 billion price tag is brought with it found its home in the VW empire as an Audi subsidiary. Since the purchase the Italian motorcycles world footprint has expanded, sales increased along with revenues. What would be an asking price and more importantly how much would it cost to close the deal? If the sale revenue is used to pay off Dieselgate bills the term would need to be as close to cash and carry as possible. If the purpose is to fund EV development more friendly terms might be available. Might.

That is the case and issues, in very crude terms, for a sale of Ducati at this time. Now let me make my case for why I don’t think it is for sale at this time.

    2001 a BMW Business Odyssey

No, I am not going to make a case for a BMW purchase of Ducati. Rather, I do see parallels with BMW in 2001 and what is going on with the VW Group and Ducati.

In the 1990s BMW AG mounted a British invasion to expanded through acquisition. In 1994, BMW bought the British Rover Group made up by Rover, Land Rover and MG brands as well as the rights to an estimated 240 defunct brands including Austin and Morris. By 2000, Rover was hemorrhaging pounds, pound sterling that is, and BMW decided to sell. BMW retained the rights to MINI and continued a fight with the VW Group and Rolls Royce PLC to break up Rolls Royce Motor Cars, Bentley from Rolls Royce PLC.

The press were full of rumors involving BMW. Many centered around the breakup of the British spoils and others about competing desires of Quandt family heirs - the majority stockholders of BMW AG. The slightest provocation could start the wildest rumor. Leaks of internal scrutiny of the Motorrad Segment started rumors that Segment was to be sold or shut down. Good rumors have an element of truth. Scrutiny was that element.

The turmoil at the board level resulted in a decision to subject every Segment and subsidiary of BMW AG to a review. The goal was to develop a plan for the next twenty years and see what parts fit and which didn’t. At the start of 2001 BMW Motorrad began its review. The smallest, oldest Segment it was seen as something of an outlier for what was now seen as a automotive company. Yet, the Motorrad Segment passed and the demise was avoided . It would take six years for the company to complete its top to bottom review. Not all survived while others were reorganized. The final restructuring to place at board levels. The final result was announced in 2008.

I see VW as being in a similar situation and doing the same. There has been a major shift in management. The strategy of diesels as an alternative to hybrids has failed. In its struggle to put together a new bridge strategy the Group has outsold Toyota once again to take over as the largest car maker.

Bringing in a group like Evercore could indeed be the harbinger of a sale. However, an alternative and more likely explanations exist. Ducati’s growth in sales, revenue and market have changed since the were last sold. In the review of all the VW Group assets it makes sense that seek outside confirmation of what they should book Ducati asset value at.

Once the asset value is known they would have to decide if they would be able to gain enough in a lump sum from a sale. Or, they could use Ducati’s value to secure loans to pay off Dieselgate debt. Alternately, the revenues from running Ducati and growing it would flow to the corporate pool and be drawn on to develop things such as EVs. For these and a number of other arguments that others could make, I do not see a sale in the near term.

    Racing - The Real Question

What is in store for Ducati Corse if there is no sale? VW and Audi have withdrawn from WRC and WEC racing. Apparently the expense at those levels for these two could no longer be justified with the race on Sunday sell on Monday business model. On the other hand Porsche continues to race and grow its programs. But racing has been an integral part of the Porsche brand and thus easier to justify.

Clearly, in branding terms, racing is perhaps even more an integral part of the Ducati marque than Porsche. But how many racing programs, if any, will the corporate leaders support if they need to siphon money from Ducati for things such as Dieselgate payments of EV development? Do you support the WSBK campaign? It is the racing series with the clearest link to the Ducati's in the showroom. Do you support MotoGP with its racing mystique and development demands?

BMW AG Quarterly Report to 31 March 2017

    Thursday 4 May 2017

Solid start to 2017 for BMW Group

The headline is from the BMW PressClub release announcing the BMW AG Quarterly Report to 31 March 2017. Upon reading it I quickly scrolled to the key paragraph for readers of this thread.

Motorcycles segment sets new delivery record

The Motorcycles segment had a successful start to the year, delivering 35,636 motorcycles and maxi-scooters (2016: 33,788 units) to customers during the first quarter, 5.5% up on the previous year. Revenues grew by 7.0% to € 623 million (2016: € 582 million). Higher volumes and positive sales-mix factors helped segment profit before financial result to jump by 33.0% to € 125 million (2016: € 94 million). Influenced by seasonal factors at the start of the motorcycle season, the segment EBIT margin came in at 20.1% (2016: 16.2%). Profit before tax also improved by 33.0% to € 125 million (2016: € 94 million).

This, along with the Automobile and Financial segment reports had me nodding in agreement as I clicked on the full BMW AG Quarterly Report to 31 March 2017 to read the rest of the story. The full report is another well organized and interesting bit of creative-non-fiction business reporting. For the fans of Cliff Notes, I have put together an abridged version featuring the Motorcycle segment along with links to the related management statements and full Q1 Report. Let me give you some of my takeaways as I read through the report.

The reports does show a strong beginning to 2017 for BMW AG. However, as you drill down into the report where you are sitting as you read it may skew your perspective slightly. Let me give you for examples of what I mean.

    BMW AG Investors

I am not one and do not pretend to understand them. In 2016 I follow as various pundits wrote about BMW for investors, and followed their readers comments about some of the concerns in 2016. Two items brought up were increases in staffing and expenses. I found it interesting that the release paragraph that follows the one sighted above ties these two concerns together.

    Workforce increased

The size of the BMW Group's workforce increased by 3.0% year-on-year and comprised 126,317 employees (2016: 122,692 employees) worldwide. The BMW Group continuously hires skilled experts and IT specialists in future-oriented areas, such as digitalisation and automated driving.

The three percent increase in workforce is similar to the increase in 2016 which caused concern. In 2016 the investment world expressed concern about increased staffing levels, capital and inventory expenses. A large portion of these costs could be attributed to the staffing, training them, and inventory build up as the Manaus Brazil motorcycle assembly plant opened. This is BMW’s first motorcycle plant outside Berlin. Now BMW is showing the investment in the motorcycle segment is reaping a return.

Announcing this year’s staffing increase after showing investors a return on a similar move last year is paying off is an example of creative non-fiction business writing. The annual report gives more details. The return or loss on the 2016 expenses was quickly known. The return on this year’s increase will take longer to be seen.

Focus on all the plusses in percentages and revenue and trust us to manage the new directions...please...please...please, please, please.

    North America

The rolled up numbers for motorcycle deliveries are up 5.5 percent corporate wide. The staff and heads of BMW USA and BMW Canada Motorcycle segments might feel a bit uncomfortable about the that number from where they are seated. When you dig into the report sales volume in the USA dropped moderately to 2,866 units (2016: 3,022 unit; –5.2%). In their April 2017 PressClub sales release, BMW Motorrad Canada reported April sales of 287 units, an increase of +10.4% compared to April, 2016. On the year, a total of 602 motorcycles have been sold representing a decrease of -4.6% over the same period last year. The April sales give a glimmer of hope; however, in both countries 2016 was a already down year.

The report will be read and spun in a variety of ways within the association. Here are some observations and questions looking for people to spin answers to.

During Q1 in North America, BMW Motorrad USA/CA sold 3,185 motorcycles and scooters creating a new crop of potential members and member needs. The pool is growing. What are we doing to prepare for and capture riders in that pool and the future quarter pool of riders?

Yes, some of these were sold to current members. What happened to their used motorcycles? Did we capture the new buyer? Or, did they become part of a stable. Are the needs and issues confronting a stable owner different from the single motorcycle owner? If so how are we meeting those needs?

What is the sales mix. The Canadian press release shows strong R model sales. The mix is tilted toward the GS models. In the USA the S has become the sales leader over the past years. The RR lead the way but in some reports the XR is taking over the lead.

BMW AG has spent a ton of money bringing the G 301 R and GS to market. What have we done to get ready for those owners?

BMW is touting 14 new models will be released this year. We have seen spy shots of a F900GS. Will BMW announce more sub 500cc models? Hate it or love it the Bagger was touted as only the first of a line of North America specific models. I have BMW is counting models, nor any idea what the other thirteen would be. I also have no idea if the BMW MOA has any idea about this either.

Executives at BMW Motorrad USA/CA may be nervous with the decrease in sales numbers year to year. Why aren’t we, but for very different reasons, when the number of potential members increases every year and the membership continues to “seek its natural level’?

abridged: BMW Group Quarterly Report to 31 March 2017

Motorcycle markets in the first quarter 2017 Motorcycle markets in the 250 cc plus class were generally slower at the beginning of the year, reflected in a 3.3% drop in motorcycle registrations worldwide. The European market was on a par with the previous year (+ 0.3%). The German market, however, decreased by 1.2%. Other major motorcycle markets in Europe also fell short of the previous year’s mark. Italy saw only a slight decrease (– 0.5%), while the Spanish market contracted by 3.9%. The only major market in Europe with an increase was France, where registrations rose by 5.4% in the first quarter. Following a weak previous year, the US market saw a further decrease in motorcycle sales (– 5.2%).

    Motorcycles Segment

Solid rise in Motorcycles segment sales volume BMW Motorrad also had a successful start to the year. The segment sold 35,636 motorcycles worldwide during the three-month period under report, achieving a record first-quarter sales volume performance for the sixth year in succession (2016: 33,788 units; +5.5%). In Europe, sales rose significantly by 10.3% to 22,991 units (2016: 20,849 units), despite difficult market conditions. Sales in Germany grew by 2.8% to 5,824 units (2016: 5,668 units). Business also developed positively in Italy, where BMW Motorrad recorded first-quarter sales of 3,463 units (2016: 3,125 units; + 10.8%). First-quarter sales in France improved significantly by 14.4% to 3,696 units (2016: 3,230 units). By contrast, sales volume in the USA dropped moderately to 2,866 units (2016: 3,022 unit; –5.2%).

    Significant increase in motorcycle production
A total of 54,466 motorcycles rolled off the production lines during the first three months of 2017, 35.2% more than one year earlier (2016: 40,280 units). This significant year-on-year increase was mainly due to initial supply of the latest models to the dealership organisation.

    Earnings up by one third
In the first quarter, the Motorcycles segment benefited from sales volume growth and the trend towards higher-value models. The sale of optional equipment also made a significant contribution to earnings. Segment revenues rose by 7.0 % to € 623 million (2016: € 582 million). Both EBIT and profit before tax improved by approximately one third to € 125 million (2016: both € 94 million; + 33.0%). The EBIT margin for the Motorcycles segment came in at 20.1% (2016: 16.2%; + 3.9 percentage points).

Workforce up slightly on previous year
The BMW Group employed 3,424 people in the Motorcycles segment at 31 March 2017 (31 December 2016: 3,351 employees; + 2.2%).

    Motorcycles segment
The Motorcycles segment recorded solid revenue growth in the first quarter, mainly reflecting a 5 . 5% rise in deliveries. Higher sales of optional equipment and improved pricing also contributed. As a result, the segment gross profit margin improved from 26 . 6% to 28 . 7%.

Cost of sales increased slightly due to the development of new models and higher production costs. Thanks to the improvement in other operating result, first-quar - ter profit before tax, which reflects seasonal factors, increased significantly. The EBIT margin for the threemonth period came in at 20.1% (2016: 16.2%). volumes as well as higher other operating income contributed to a slight improvement in the Financial Services segment’s first-quarter profit before taxes.

    Further growth to continue
    Profitability within target range expected
    Global economy offers favourable conditions

The report on outlook, risks and opportunities describes the expected development of the BMW Group, including the associated material risks and opportunities, from the perspective of the Group’s management. It contains forward-looking assertions and is based on expectations and assessments which are, by their nature, subject to uncertainty. As a result, actual outcomes, including those attributable to political and economic developments, could differ substantially – either positively or negatively – from the expectations described below. Further related information is provided in the Annual Report 2016 (Outlook, pp 82, Risks and Opportunities, pp 88). Economic outlook According to the forecast of the International Monetary Fund, the global economy is set to grow by approximately 3.5% in 2017.

Within the eurozone, elections in France and Germany in 2017 and the official start of exit negotiations between the EU and the UK expose economic developments in the region to significant uncertainty. Nevertheless, estimations point to a continued upturn, with a 1.6 % increase in gross domestic product (GDP). Falling unemployment combined with rising consumption by private households, solid industrial production figures and robust investment activities should provide a broad basis for economic growth in the eurozone.

The ECB is likely to continue its expansive monetary policies, given that the inflation rate in 2017 is only expected to rise to around 1.6% and therefore below the medium-term target of no more than 2%. The euro is not expected to depreciate further against the US dollar in the current year.

The economic climate in Germany is expected to remain favourable. Strong domestic consumption, solid levels of investment and a robust export sector are all contributing to the positive development. As a result, GDP is forecast to grow by approximately 1.6% in 2017.

The French economy is forecast to grow by 1.3 %. Here too, the export sector is performing well. The positive trend in investment activities from the previous year is likely to continue and could also gain momentum. By contrast, the unemployment rate is only falling slowly.

In Italy, the job market is recovering only gradually and is therefore unlikely to generate a significant increase in consumer spending. Overall, the Italian economy is forecast to grow by 0.9% in 2017.

Spain is expected to contribute to Europe’s overall economic growth with an above-average GDP rise of around 2.5%. The main factors driving this positive development are high investment levels, solid industrial production and a dynamic export sector.

In March 2017, the UK government submitted a formal request to exit the EU, marking the beginning of a twoyear phase of negotiations on the future relationship between the EU and the UK. In April, the government announced its intention to hold elections in the UK in June 2017. This could bring additional uncertainty. With some signs of economic slowdown already emerging for the current year, the UK economy is now expected to grow only by around 1.6%.

GDP in the USA is expected to grow by 2.3% in 2017. Despite a strong US dollar, exports could increase significantly more than in the previous year. Investments and industrial production could also rise and contribute to improved economic growth. With wages rising, consumer spending is likely to remain the bedrock of the US economy.

The government in China is continuing the transition from an investment-driven to a consumer-driven economy. For this reason, growth rates in the coming years are likely to be lower than in the past. State-driven economic stimulus measures should prevent any abrupt downturn in the economy. In line with the Chinese government’s own target, the pace of growth is now forecast to decelerate slightly to 6.5% in 2017. However, the risk of a possible financial and liquidity crisis in China remains, in view of steep and continuing rises in debt levels, particularly in the corporate sector.

The Japanese economy could pick up slightly and grow by around 1.1% in 2017. Strong growth in exports and industrial production should provide the domestic economy with fresh momentum. However, consumer spending is likely to grow only moderately year-on-year.

India is improving investment and planning security for investors by creating a favourable, competitive environment. These measures should encourage growth and enable GDP to rise by around 7.3% in the current year.

The situation in Brazil and Russia is heavily dependent on the price of oil. With the recent increase in oil price, the value of the Russian rouble and the Brazilian real has tended upward, thus making imports cheaper and reducing inflationary pressures. These developments have enabled the central banks in both countries to move away partially from their restrictive monetary policies and stimulate the economy by means of lower interest rates. GDP growth rates over the full year are forecast at around 1.3% for Russia and 0.6% for Brazil.

The average price of Brent crude oil during the current year’s reporting period has been around 55 US dollars per barrel, mainly due to production cutbacks by OPEC countries and other major oil-producing nations. With inventories of crude oil at historically high levels, however, significant price increases should be limited for the foreseeable future.

    Motorcycle markets in 2017
The world’s motorcycle markets in the 250 cc plus class are forecast to grow slightly in 2017. In Europe, the positive trend is likely to continue in the major markets of Germany, France, Italy and Spain. In the USA, the motorcycles market is forecast to remain flat or slightly below the previous year’s level.

    Motorcycles segment
Deliveries to customers: significant increase expected The BMW Group expects the positive trend in the Motorcycles segment to continue. The new R NineT Pure and R NineT Racer models unveiled at international trade fairs held in autumn 2016 have been available to customers since March 2017. Likewise, the new G 310 R and the updated version of the R 1200 GS have been available since March. The revised S 1000 RR has been in showrooms since January and was joined by the updated versions of the S 1000 R and the K 1600 GT in February. The new K 1600 B, the updated version of the luxury K 1600 GTL and the R NineT Urban G / S will follow in the summer and the G 310 GS in September. The broader product range is designed to appeal to new customer groups and provide further momentum for sales volume growth. Overall, deliveries of BMW motorcycles to customers are forecast to increase significantly year-on-year (2016: 145,032 units).

EBIT margin expected in target range between 8 and 10%
With effect from the financial year 2017, EBIT margin will serve as an additional key performance indicator for the Motorcycles segment. Accordingly, segment performance will also be managed based on the operating return on sales (EBIT margin) in future. Further information can be found in the description of the Group management system in the section “General Information on the BMW Group” in the Annual Report 2016. In this context, a target range of 8 to 10% has also been set for the Motorcycles segment. The EBIT margin for the Motorcycles segment is expected to lie within this range in 2017 (2016: 9.0%).

Return on capital employed expected at previous year’s level Segment
RoCE in 2017 is forecast to be in line with the previous year (2016: 33.0%). The long-term target RoCE of 26% for the Motorcycles segment should therefore be exceeded

    Overall assessment by Group management
Business is expected to develop positively in the financial year 2017. The introduction of numerous new automobile and motorcycle models as well as the expansion of individual mobility-related services give reason to expect further profitable growth during the current year. Despite the challenges previously described, Group profit before tax is forecast to grow slightly. Based on the forecast of a slight increase in deliveries to customers, Automotive segment revenues are expected to grow slightly. At the same time, a slight decrease in fleet carbon dioxide emissions is expected. The Group’s targets are to be supported by a slight increase in the workforce. The Automotive segment’s EBIT margin in 2017 is expected to remain within the target range of between 8 and 10%, while its RoCE is forecast to decrease slightly. A slight decline is also forecast for the RoE in the Financial Services segment. Both performance indicators should, however, be above their long-term targets of 26% (RoCE) and 18% (RoE) respectively. Motorcycles segment deliveries to customers are expected to rise significantly in the forecast period, with an EBIT margin within the target range of between 8 and 10% and RoCE at the previous year’s level.

Depending on the political and economic situation and the outcomes of the risks and opportunities described in the Annual Report 2016, actual business performance could, however, differ from current expectations.

As a globally operating enterprise, the BMW Group is confronted with numerous risks and opportunities. Making full use of opportunities is the basis for the Group’s corporate success. The Group also consciously takes risks in order to achieve growth, profitability, efficiency and sustainable business for the future. There have been no material changes to the overall risk profile compared to that described in the Group Management Report 2016. Further information on risks and opportunities, and on the methods employed to manage them, can be found in the "Report on Risks and Opportunities" section of the Annual Report 2016 (pp 88).

    Ducati to Royal Enfield?

Last week a Reuters report tipped India motorcycle manufacturer Hero to be in line to buy Ducati and Help VWAG pay DieselGate expenses. This week Royal Enfield is the latest press pick to buy Ducati. The Times of India began the latest round of speculation in an article titled, Royal Enfield revving up to buy Ducati? *

Royal Enfield (Eischer Motors) presents an interesting option for a buyer. Siddharth Lal, MD & CEO of Eicher Motors is quoted saying “We can’t talk to you on such things..” when asked if they were in the hunt for Ducati. A classic non denial denial in the long line of such statements which have started thousands of rumors. Lal goes on to describe the company saying, “We are today the most profitable motorcycle company in the world... We want to become a global leader in motorcycles, we want to become the number one in middle-weight markets around the world...”

The claim is very believable. During a business year running from April 1 to March 31 the company reported 2016 unit sales of 498,791 up from 324,055 the previous year. The compiled numbers due out shortly should show another increase. The company is in the process of expanding production with a new plant in Chennai. It is expected to be online in 2018 and would bring total company capacity to 900,000 units per year. Either Motors is hoping that capacity will be eaten up as they expand the Royal Enfield line with a corporate run expansion into Europe, Asia and North America.

Ducati and Royal Enfield fit together, in a Pangaea sort of way, when you lay them out together. The new company would lack much of the pesky duplication to sap energy and money from the venture. Rather there are strengths and opportunities to expand and build both marques. Just as you see a world dominating company coming together you are caught up short unable to answer the “why” when confronted with another quote from Lal.

"I have a general view on such things. We are always open to thoughts and ideas. But as you know, we are the most focused and selective company... So basically, without saying absolutely no to anything - because we never say never - we are so zeroed in on our own opportunity that we do not want anything to distract us."

As enticing as purchasing Ducati would be, in the end, I believe there are too many distractions taking away value, along with timing delays paying for a new Chennai plant may not allow the deal to happen. Both issues will only increase with time. Given the hurdles public companies must go through in such transactions it could be 2020 before the new combination could begin sorting them out. However, of the many suitor companies mentioned so far, this is the most interesting. provides an alternative source for all the purchase rumors and turns them in another direction.

“With no official confirmation from Ducati or Royal Enfield these developments are open to speculation, although Andrea Buzzoni, global sales and marketing director at Ducati did confirm the company was looking for a partner in India to make small-capacity motorcycles.”

Where are my motorcycle Pangaea maps? Instead of trying to put the continents together, what if, I just link the two together at...what about the movement of people and animals (a.k.a. Motorcycle designs) back and forth until continental drift takes its natural course?

VWAG has been expanding the world reach of Ducati to increase sales and profits. I am in the camp that thinks Ducati’s revenue over a long term is more valuable to VWAG than that of a short term sale. In this scenario Ducati has survived the corporate axe in VWAG’s top to bottom valuation of holdings. Ducati is weak in the sub 500cc market. What if speculation started by the valuation process during the review is being compounded by the search for a partner to help expand Ducati’s product line?

All of this and five buck will get me coffee and change down at the official Fly-Over-Land coffee shop.
