KTM 2016 Interim Financial Report - is available at KTM Investor Relations once you are there and done poking around that page click on the Financial Reports heading for the report.

KTM provides some interesting reading with this mid-year report. The creative nonfiction business writing does not have to deal with explaining huge cage numbers; thus is more to the point for the two wheeled enthusiast. That point may confuse you quickly.

KTM places the US market decline for the first six months at approximately down 2.4 percent. Yet it claims to have increased its shares of that market for both KTM and Husqvarna by 4.6 and 5.1 percent respectively. Some of this overall share has come at Roundel expense. The last time BMW USA reported monthly sales in may they were down roughly 40 percent from the previous year.

The Austrian rival has passed the BMW Motorrad goal of 150,000 units sold in a year while the German Mothership has not reached it yet. We can debate the subjective merits and superiority of one marque over the other without getting to the key point of the sales numbers difference. KTM is expanding its heavyweight bike lineup (over 500cc) to compete on a more toe to toe basis with BMW. However, their large sub 500cc product line give them an advantage for now and the near future. How the new G 301R and future siblings will help BMW sales will be interesting to follow.

We drove it from Richmond, Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland, so we have a pretty good idea of what it’s like. And from that drive alone, we figure it’s a damn good car. The MINI JCW is fast, hilarious fun to drive, raucous and deadly on a track. However, Audi is planning on its own hot h

1937 BMW 328 Roadster – The Successful Racing Car Of The 30s
BMW’s image today – that of an automaker that builds sports cars, premium cars, technical and very innovative – goes back in time until 1930, when cars like BMW 328 Roadster came to life. The 328 Roadster raced in Mille Miglia and it was a very innovative car with respect to aerodynamics. A lot of the elements that were on that car at that time are important today as well. Tuesday After Labor Day

For me, the Tuesday after Labor Day has long been a day of mixed emotions. It marks the unofficial end to summer and the start of fall. In my youth, fall ment returning to school. The meaning of this changed with age and what I had been during during the summer. Even as moved into a business career the start of school continues to be a part of the mixed emotions on this Tuesday after Labor Day.

In my business career it meant a change in the challenges for the coming months. September was a time to reflect on the how the business year had progressed as I put together the Q3 reporting. The Q3 report preparation informed the planning for the close of the current year, and budget planning for the coming year for operating and capital budgets.

Sitting down at my desk, on the Tuesday after Labor Day, to begin those tasks I would remind myself that this was the start of my favorite time of year in Fly-Over-Land. With the start of the school year most of the tourist and vacationers were gone. The fall winds freshened and no more power boats too get in the way on the lakes I sailed. More to the point of this thread the winding roads taking me to those lakes were far less crowded thus more fun to ride. The trees would be changing colors making the ride a visual treat. Ah, this Tuesday is the start of my favorite time of year.

On this Tuesday after Labor Day I am wondering how the management team at BMW Motorrad NA and CA are feeling as they sit down at their desks. Both posted August sales reports to the home office and explained them in PressClub releases. Now they begin their process of rolling up information for Q3 reporting and continue their planning for the coming year. If they are at all like me in thinking this is one of the best times of the year to be riding they would much rather be riding than sitting at their desk.

BMW Group US did not include any information on Motorrad sales in the August 2016 sales release. This is not an unusual thing. In fact, around the world, many of the BMW Group national sales release do not include Motorrad sales figures. What makes this particular case interesting to me is they had reported the figures for the first five months of the year then stopped with the May PressClub release. With the exception of March the numbers were dismal. May came in -40 percent for the month putting the US market down -17.3 percent year-to-date.

BMW Group Canada has been reporting Motorrad sales in its releases. While the US group started -31.9 percent in the hole with January’s sales; the Canadians were plus 19.6 percent in January. By the end of Q1 that had grown to +59.3 for the month of March putting them plus +48.4 year-to-date. There has been a great deal of red ink used since then. The Group has not posted a month with an increase over last year since March. This has eaten into the year-to-date plus reported in March to the point that the August PressClub release puts the Canadian Group at a minus -11 percent year-to-date.

BMW Group Mexico falls into the category of national groups rarely reporting Motorrad sales figures. In its June PressClub release it did report a 13.1 percent year-to-date increase over the previous year. BMW Group’s June PressClub release showed Motorrad sales up 3.0 percent worldwide. This made Mexico one of the groups holding up BMW Group’s worldwide sales numbers.

Worldwide the BMW Group’s reported year-to-date plus, of 3.0 percent, in Motorrad sales had shrunk from Q1’s plus 7.7 percent. June was also the first month BMW Group reported a negative month in sales. The year-to-date sales erosion continued in July. The July PressClub release put the month down -2.7 percent for the month bring the year-to-date number down to +2.1 percent.

In the time I have been following BMW PressClub and the sales release they post BMW Group NA and Group Canada have never been in lock step in monthly sales plus and minus percents. New model release dates vary impacting when a Group gets a bump from them. The difference in size unit sales numbers that make go into making the monthly percents. A shift of 10 units +/- in a given month will yield a different percentage shift for BMW Canada than for its US counterpart. However, allowing for monthly variations, over the run of a year they do seem to trend together.

As I write this, BMW Group has not released their worldwide roll up of August sales. The NA/Canada negative trend suggests further negative should be expected. I will post them in a separate piece when they do along with some thoughts about why BMW Group NA and Canada are where they are and how the worldwide year may end for BMW Motorrad.
