SBK ÔÇô 2012 Portim?úo, the penultimate round

It is race weekend Thursday and time to 'fool' around with the Manufacturer Standings preview.

Aprilia 384.5 pts
Biaggi left Nurburgring once again having results beyond his weekend performance. Laverty will yield a lead if team rules existed in SBK but Davies is hot in so many ways and is the Aprilia rider to watch this weekend.

BMW 377 pts
Portimao should be a good tack for BMW.

Haslam: Press releases suggest he is in good, or a least acceptable racing health. At this point he reminds me of Troy Corser a couple years ago; beat up, tired yet still doing his best. He could podium but don't expect a win from him.

Melandri: Will do well, he must. There is every reason to expect him to reprise his Race 2 top of the podium finish this year.

Badovini finished ahead of Corser in Race 1 last year and ahead of both Haslam and Corser in Race 2. This year if he finds his way out of SP1 I will be pleased. Sunday he will struggle to finish.

Ducati 342 pts
Checa took Race 1 last year and just missed the podium in Race 2. This year the Ducati contingent should practice and qualify well but fall short of the podium on Sunday.

Kawasaki 322 pts.
Sykes poles and fades on Sunday. Baz finishes ahead of him but who else he beats is up for discussion.

Honda 240.5 pts
Rea, fresh from a stron MotoGP debut, arrives to a track he scored a double P3 last year. I have not liked Rea or Honda of late but this weekend he are hot and he finishes ahead of the Ducati contingent.

Suzuki 120.5 pts
Mirror images are the reverse of the real thing. Kawasaki is becoming the real thing. For my coffe money Suzuki is its mirror image. They will struggle Friday and Saturday to sort the bike out an maybe make it into SP2. On Sunday they will improve. The only question is how much.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport secured provisional pole position for SundayÔÇÖs races at Portim?úo. The Portuguese track welcomed the teams with sunny and hot conditions. BMW Motorrad factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) set the fastest time in today's first qualifying practice. His team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) rounded up the successful Friday for the squad. He qualified for the provisional second row, finishing the session in fifth on his BMW S 1000 RR. Despite the good results, the team is well aware that there is still a lot of work to do to best prepare for the races. Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini (both ITA) of the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team finished the first qualifying practice in ninth and 11th respectively. A big ÔÇÿThank youÔÇÖ to Leon Haslam.

After being a vital part of BMW MotorradÔÇÖs World Superbike project for two years, factory rider Leon Haslam will leave the team at the end of 2012.

Munich/Portim?úo, 22nd September*2012. BMW Motorrad and factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) will part ways at the end of 2012. Leon has been part of Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport since the end of 2010 and has made a valuable contribution to the successes of the German manufacturer in the FIM Superbike World Championship.

ÔÇ£We want to take the opportunity to say a big ÔÇÿThank youÔÇÖ to Leon. He is not only very fast and talented, but also a great fighter. He never gives up; we can see this often enough, when he defies even serious injuries, jumps on his BMW S 1000 RR and fights to give his very best for the whole team. We can always count on him 100 percent, on and off the race track. He joined our project when it was still young. And during the past two years he played a major part in bringing this project forward by always working hard on developing and improving the bike. BMW Motorrad would not be where it is now ÔÇô fighting for the world championship ÔÇô without LeonÔÇÖs contribution. And Leon has a great personality; he is a real friend to all of us. We are very happy that we could work with him for the past two years and of course we will give him maximum support in the remaining races to enable him to get the successes he deserves. And we know that he also will continue to give his very best for BMW Motorrad until our ways part.ÔÇØ

Leon Haslam:
ÔÇ£It is obviously very sad to saying goodbye after two great years at BMW Motorrad. It has been a tough uphill project but I have enjoyed it all the way. So I want to say thank you to everyone involved and hopefully we can finish strong in the last races for them so we can part ways on a high note.ÔÇØ

FWIW: It is great to see a smile on Leon Haslam's face. It has been a long hard season for him, with precious little to smile about.

Haslam provided a very important bridge for riders of the S1000RRv2. From a rider's perspective Troy Corser will get the nod for the work done over his tenure on the BMW Motorrad Team. Haslam was a key part of last year's two pronged development that finished the .v2 setup.

2012 should have been his chance to finish the championship hunt he came close with on a Suzuki. The crash in Phillip Island testing happened early enough to have surgery and demonstrate heroic commitment coming home in P5 and keeping his championship dream alive for 2012. The crash and surgery came late enough that I have to question if he fully recovered his form. The season did not get much better. Certainly there have been podiums and he has spent his time at the front, yet he has not reached the top podium step.

Racing is embodiment of the phrase 'what have you done for us lately?' With the news of BMW's Superbike effort who would be in the saddle for the team came into question. Rumors of Haslam keeping his seat or being replaced by Ben Spies, Chaz Davies and others sprang up. Contract talks ground on with BMW and Haslam. Did they offer him a CRT ride in MotoGP? He publicly said he was not interested in a tier 2 MotoGP ride. Did they think he could not do the job in SBK? Spies disappeared from the fray and Davies landed the spot.

Haslam landed a job with Honda and from the sounds of it he is part of a big effort by the Big Red Wing to get back on top. Good news for Haslam and riders of the yet to be developed S1000RRv3. Haslam will do a good job at Honda forcing the boys in Munich to work hard on engines and the Italian Mob to work hard on chassis giving BMW fans a better bike in the future.

Thank you Leon for all the racing fun these two seasons and for the bike to come as BMW tries to stay ahead of you.

It was a black Sunday for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport at Portim?úo (POR). Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) crashed on the opening lap of race one. As he was lying on the tarmac, he was hit by the bike of Chaz Davies (GBR), who fell when trying to avoid him. As Marco’s was severe pain after the heavy impact, the Italian was taken to Portim?úo Hospital for precautionary checks. He returned to the team in the afternoon shortly after the second race. The examinations showed that he suffered no major injuries but has painful contusions on his back. His team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) finished a more than difficult first race in 19th. While a great racing weekend was turning into a disaster the FIM and Infront were talking about how to standardize superbike racing world wide. The goal is to standardize all the various national federation formats sanctioned by the FIM with the rules that World Superbike races under.

The goal is to have an affordable racing format. National level teams will like the sound of that. Manufacturers may receive this with mixed feelings. The down side is SBK is a developmental class. New rules would need to honor the development process, keep it from turning into a MotoGP prototype class but not SuperStock with slicks. The upside is with a standardized global racing class they could develop parts and sell them world wide with greater ease.

Afford ability at the national level has the appeal of attracting riders and teams to the class. The national level presents a mass of issues to deal with in the standardization process. Italy has just eliminated SBK as a class and put slicks on SuperStock bikes to save money and attract riders and teams. The Brits developed an entire set of rules going in a very different direction than the current SBK rules. The US looked at SBK rules but the fuel tank limits either eliminate host tracks that are to long or races have to be shortened.

All of this is not being done out of the goodness of peoples hearts. Infront is interested in creating a world market for its Superbike product and expanding the base in the process. Expanding race fan base means more TV and advertising revenue for them and the sport. They may be interested in changing the current two race format with three hour break between them. Pit stops were floated as an idea to accomplish this. You could come up with a neat little package for TV that has wheel to wheel racing, tons of passing and the geek factor of pit stop strategy analysis.

While all this is going on riders and teams will be watching closely. The investment in rolling racing stock is a major issue. At the privateer level it can take several seasons to develop a bike to be competitive at the local level. Longer races and pit stops would require another set of gear and team members that could be problematic to startup teams. The trade off for the aspiring rider or team owner for these hurdles is on the other side the new system may offer a way to work up the food chain to the big time.

Talks are just beginning out in the open. Speculation by press and fans has probably mirrored behind the scenes talks by Bridgepoint/Dorna/Infront and the FIM to clear up the current mess of MotoGP/CRT and an increasingly more prototype class called World SBK.

Lots of Bench-Racing to do in the off season.

Munich, 26th September*2012. After his heavy crash in Sunday’s first race at Portim?úo (POR) and preliminary examinations at the local hospital, BMW Motorrad factory rider Marco Melandri returned home to Italy on Monday. During the last few days he has undergone further medical examinations. These checks confirmed the good news that Marco has no internal injuries. But they showed that in addition to the painful contusions he suffered on his back, the Italian cracked the tenth and 12th ribs on the right side of his chest when he was hit by another bike while lying on the tarmac after his fall in the beginning of the race....More
