Yamaha: "Dominant" Kawasaki has hurt WSBK spectacle
    100+Motorsport.com - MOTOGP - Stories / 2d
Kawasaki has been the dominant force in WSBK since 2015, the first of four successive seasons in which Jonathan Rea has romped to the title aboard a ZX-10RR. The Ulsterman won 17 races this year, surpassing Carl Fogarty's

FWIW Does domination of a sport by a single group hurt it? Intuitively the answer is yes but if you scratch back the ink spilled the explanation is a bit more complicated. While MotoGP is the land of sugar plum fairy designs that dance in the head of brand fans, WSBK is the blue color track to street series. Kawasaki decided to forego the megabucks of MotoGP and refine their ZX. With superbike sales rapidly declining, other manufacturers did not see the reward in actively supporting both. With MotoGP hogging the headlines and imaginations of race fans the business math was simple. BMW Motorrad chose a slightly different plan from the rest - race local, sell local - by focusing on national series titles. In a simple series of business dominos falling Kawasaki went from an also-ran in MotoGP to the dominant name in WSBK. Yippie for them and questionable outcomes for race fans.

Sales numbers in the world market show people are buying more superbikes. The MotoGP majors, along with BMW Motorrad, smell a buck to be made racing WSBK weekends and selling superbikes weekdays. Yipper for them. Yippie for Superbike riders as seriously updated designs wend there way to the showroom. Yippie for racing fans? Maybe not.

Kawasaki may be toppled someday. No big deal if it is a checkbook victory. The challenge for any series is giving racing worth watching. For my fan dollar, the undercard races on a MotoGP or WSBK race weekend are more fun to watch.

    FWIW: ON KTM EYING DUCATI

I have turned a jaundiced eye on previous Ducati sale rumors. This one has the potential of making sense and, in some form, actually happening. In the past, tales have been based purely on economic arguments which did not hold up to analysis; well at least mine. In simple terms, the discussions went along the lines, VW is getting hit with enormous fines for emission violations, Ducati does not make sense in the product line of the VW empire, and needs to sell Ducati to help pay for the fines and clean house. However, VW was able to find funds elsewhere in the organization, cleaned other less or nonproductive units from its portfolio, and Ducati was returning an excellent ROI thus (thank you very much) providing some much-needed cash flow. What has changed?

VW and their CEO, Herbert Diess

In the early 2000s, BMW was exiting Britain after divesting themselves of Rover. In that process, changes in the Quandt family (the primary holder of BMW stock) goals resulted in a unit by unit review of BMW AG. If a segment did not fit into the proposed BMW vision, they would be sold or shuttered. In this review process, the Quandt family remained, BMW Motorrad was the first unit to pass muster and reorganize under the plan, Herbert Diess (yes the same Herbert Diess serving as VW's CEO) became the head of BMW Motorrad and the segment would become something of farm program for training management in the new thinking.

In the wake of Dieselgate, VW went through its version of the BMW saga, resulting in boardroom and senior management changes. The goal in these changes is to transform VW AG into a viable world leader in the post Dieselgate world.

In an unlikely coup, VW AG snapped up Herbert Diess as CEO to reorganize VW AG. Deiss had taken retirement ostensibly due to hitting a glass ceiling at BMW. After an appropriate time on the sidelines and with some sort of wink and nod from BMW AG, Deiss took his resume full of much-needed experience to VW AG and the Chairman of the Executive Board of Management position.

With the stars aligned the Ducati sale rumor mill saw new light glowing on the old arguments. Mr. Diess has helped with some enlightening but cryptic comments. He has not denied the review of units making up the parent group and their need to justify existence. One of the above articles sights a recent comment.

"Diess spoke about a merger with another brand as a real option for Ducati, saying: “I can imagine a merger or a collaboration with other brands, Ducati simply as a motorcycle icon within the VW company is not enough.” "

Stefan Pierer, the head of KTM, has expressed interest. In the closing paragraph of an interview with Speedweek.com, quotes him,

"Ducati is the Ferrari of the motorcycle industry. Of course, having such a brand in our group would be interesting. It is not a question of price, but it is about the topic: ... but with the question: 'How can I become stronger together?' Time will tell…"

The VW - Ducati - KTM deal makes a great deal of sense, even to me. Yet, I will continue to turn a jaundiced eye on rumors that a traditional sale by VW AG of Ducati to KTM is all but done and dusted. I can see a deal by Diess and Pierer; just not a simple swap of cash and assumption of debt for the marque. I believe this duo has something far more interesting in store for the motorcycling world if they come together.

KTM and VW coming together has happened before and continues to this day. The X-Bow, KTM’s own product line anomaly, is powered by engines supplied by Audi (the parent of Ducati in the in the VW AG org chart). The idea of the two talking about shared business interests expanding is no real surprise. Pierer has made statements admiring how VW AG is managing diverse product lines. The thing is the wording of both is laced with phrases like strategic partnership, merger, and collaboration.

Both Diess and Pierer are familiar with licensing deals. This is a bit wonky. Husqvarna still holds the name for the motorcycles bearing their name even though the development, manufacturing and distribution has gone from Husqvarna to Cagiva/MV Agusta, BMW Motorrad and now KTM. In a strategic partnership deal between VW AG and KTM the debate may be who controls what component of Ducati.

The VW purchase of Ducati was justified in part by the need for their expertise in small engine design and engine management systems. In the near future need continues for VW. Investments have been made in developing the Ducati product line and distribution/sales in new markets. In doing that Ducati has grown in sales and bottom line profit. In a sale, investors and bean counters would want to recover as much of the investment not recovered already and enough blue sky in the sale price to justify letting the revenue/profit stream go.

Pierer’s goal is to grow KTM into the third largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, right behind Honda and Yamaha. Acquiring Ducati would add numbers to the sales column to reach that goal. Bajaj, The product lines have some overlap but the brand identity and planning could deal with this issue. KTM’s India partner, would help bring Ducati to that market. Initially India was avoided in Ducati’s world wide expansion due to tariffs. The marque has gone into the market but is sitting at the extreme end of the price line. Pierer is a realist. KTM/Husqvarna have experienced runs of double digit sales growth. He knows that is not sustainable and is laying a strategy to sustain on single digit figures. Would purchasing Ducati, even with the added sales numbers, improve KTM or rob cash needed to run a sensible strategy to purchase an expensive Ferrari?

In the near future a strategic alliance may be the way for these two to move forward. What that means requires more information about what is in the back of the Ducati house in Bologna than I have. How those assets are handled and to whose benefit will decide if any kind of deal will be made.

As always, this and a fiver will buy you an excellent cup of coffee, roll, and change for a nice tip at the Official Fly-Over-Land Coffee Shop.
