Bench Racing & The Morning Reads

You think you are going nuts. :rofl

There is another thread on the forum titled ÔÇô Done anything stupid lately?

Sunday I said goodbye to Fly-Over-Land and headed back to suburb of Lilydale someplace near Mississippi River Lock and Dam No. 1. It remains to be seen if this is stupid or not; however, at this point it is very much like a poorly scripted Marx Brothers movie. The plot is evolving, definitely not as planed so please be patient. I hope to be posting again soon.

The lead to the BMW press releases was - ÔÇ£It has been a disappointing weekend for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport in the fifth race weekend of the FIM Superbike World Championship in the United StatesÔÇØ. Haslam thinks they have identified some issues and need to work on them. Corser sited tyre wear and inter-related traction issues and wants to investigate. Bernhard Gobmeier (BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director) had this to say. ÔÇ£This was a very disappointing weekend. We cannot be satisfied with results like these. We ended up way behind our own expectations. We now have to analyse the reasons for our weak performance. We have to and we will work hard to perform better soon.ÔÇØ

They are correct; it was a disappointing weekend for riders, team and fans. There may be issues that have been found and need analysis. Gobmeier is correct they can not be satisfied with these kinds of results if for no other reason than Munich will not be.

Meanwhile over at BMW Motorrad Italy Serafino Foti, Sports Director of BMW Motorrad Italy Superbike Team said: "we are satisfied with the weekend. He had more to be satisfied with after Ayrton Badovini scored two top 10 finishes (7th and 9th) for the weekend along with James Toseland scoring a point. Instead of leaving MMP perplexed and clueless the Italian Enigma team feels it has things to build on.

Le Mans, 6th June 2011. Normally the scrutineering of cars and driver registration ahead of a race meeting are two unspectacular events. However, that certainly does not apply to the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FR): Many fans from across the world were very eager to attend the formalities on Monday when Team BMW Motorsport presented its two BMW M3 GT cars for technical inspection and completed the so-called ÔÇ£ConvocationÔÇØ at the Place des Jacobins. bmwgroup.com: BMW Group increases sales by 22.1% in May

Most successful May ever for BMW Group sales
Solid double-digit growth across Europe, America and Asia

Munich. The BMW Group is well on its way to a record year with another all-time sales high for the month of May. A total of 147,563 BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce brand vehicles were delivered to customers (prev. yr. 120,850/ +22.1%). Deliveries for the year to the end of May climbed 20.7% to 667,511 vehicles (prev. yr. 552,866).

In the motorcycle segment the news is mixed and not as strong.

BMW Motorrad: Global sales rose by 3.5% to 12,568 units in May. Worldwide a total of 48.749 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers in the year to the end of May 2011. This represents an increase of 7.3% year-on-year. The strongest market for BMW Motorrad is Germany with 9,496 deliveries (prev. yr. 7,240 / +31.1%) per Mai.
Husqvarna Motorcycles delivered 3,080 motorcycles (-4.6%) in the first five months of the year. 537 motorcycles were delivered in May (-59,5%).

FWIW

BMW Motorrad continues to buck the market trend. Without a model break down it is hard to tell which bikes are leading the way. Other news sources have the RR supplanting the GS as the number one BMW seller in the UK. The introduction of the K1600 no doubt plays a role in the good BMW sales numbers.

While Husqvarna appears to be struggling it may be a victim of its own trickle marketing plan. News has been leaking about the 900cc street bike and several other new lines to be introduced at the Milano show. Customers may be delaying a purchase at a Husqvarna dealer until these models show.

Update: Friday, 10 June ÔÇô Misano 1st Qualifying

SBK

Biaggi Checa then Checa Biaggi set the pace for Friday qualifying.

Free Practice ended with Checa on top of the timing sheet and Biaggi in P2. The best lap chart put Biaggi on top leading everyone to expect an exciting qualifying. For the 25 minutes of the session Biaggi led the field then Checa took over the top spot and Biaggi led the field chasing Checa.

The Enigma Riders had done well in practice but for the first half of the qualifying session they could not get it together. Speeds, sector times and lap times are all over the place until roughly the 25 minute mark.

Badovini returned to the track for a round of hot laps and on his 11th lap for the session he moved up to P3 then headed into the pits. In short order Corser took P3 followed by others leaving Badovini in P9 when this round was done. Haslam never seemed able to put all sectors together to put better than a P7 up on the board.

With 3'23 shown remaining on Live Timing Corser lit up the board with the word CRASH. He was in P5 at the time and beginning his 21st lap of the session. Eventually he was shown as Pit In but did not complete another lap for the session.

Badovini did not follow up on his P3 high and finished in P14. His times seemed to indicate the he and the team had laid down a time they felt they could advance to Superpole with and worked on other setup issues.

It is difficult to read to much into timing numbers. Haslam never seemed to be comfortable with speed or sector times. He will not be happy with his P11 performance yet it is better than I expected as the session developed.

Lanzi is not a factor for BMW Italia. He finished dead last and his role seems more data gatherer than racer.

The sixth round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship at Misano (ITA) started with mixed emotions for the Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport. This Friday morning went well with works riders, Leon Haslam (GBR) and Troy Corser (AUS), finishing third and fourth in the first Free Practice. But in the final minutes of the first Qualifying Session Troy crashed in Turn 8 and had to be taken to the Medical Centre. After being checked by the medical staff it was found he had suffered no serious injuries. The decision as to whether it will be possible for him to ride tomorrow will be taken tomorrow morning according to his physical conditions. Troy provisionally qualified fifth. Leon tried several solutions for his BMW S 1000 RR and finished the day 11th.

ÔÇ£It was quite a good day. We were trying a lot of different strategies with the bike, and I think we have made some positive moves today. We were not really caring about lap times, and did most of the session with the same tyre. Then at the end of the session, I still put in my best time after ten laps. Now we just have to put all the bits and pieces together for tomorrow, but I am feeling pretty confident.ÔÇØ

Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£After the checks in the Medical Centre the doctor told us Troy seems to be okay with no serious injuries. He obviously was following Carlos Checa and then highsided in a pretty fast corner heavily.

ÔÇ£On the track, this Friday was not too bad for us. We tested quite a few new things and now we have to work on the set-up. All in all, it is going in a good direction. We now just hope that Troy is okay and will be able to ride tomorrow without any physical restrictions.ÔÇØ

troycorser.com:

Troy - 5th, 1:36.656
Coming out Quercia corner, I was highsided and took a heavy fall. It was on the second lap on the tyre, but I donÔÇÖt know if that was a contributory factor or not and we will have to look at the telemetry to see what went on. All I know is that I am pretty sore. I took a hit to the back of my neck and also my right hip and for sure IÔÇÖm going to be pretty second-hand tonight. I donÔÇÖt know how itÔÇÖs all going to feel in the morning, but IÔÇÖll have another medical check and then weÔÇÖll decide if I am fit enough to take part tomorrow. ItÔÇÖs a real shame because things had gone pretty reasonably today and I was happy enough with fifth on day one. Now weÔÇÖll have to see what happens tomorrow morning and how I feel.

Corser ready to race.
After his crash yesterday Troy Corser has been given the green light to ride in todayÔÇÖs sessions at Misano.
Misano, 11th June 2011. Good news for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport and works rider, Troy Corser. After his heavy crash in yesterdayÔÇÖs first Qualifying Session, the Australian has been cleared to continue participating at the sixth round of the FIM Superbike World Championship 2011 at Misano (ITA).
After his highsider Troy was taken to the Medical Centre yesterday afternoon. According to the first medical checks he suffered no serious injuries, but severe bruising on his lower back, his right hip and right elbow. He also has some abrasions to the skin. This morning another examination at the Medical Centre followed and Troy was given the green light to ride.
Troy Corser:
ÔÇ£I am okay. Actually I feel better than I thought I would this morning. I am still a bit stiff on my back and my hip. But I had a good night of sleep, so we will see. Generally I feel not too bad. I know that it is going to be hard work on the bike. I will do just some laps this morning. It is good that we tested here, so we do not have to do a lot of laps as we have a pretty good setting for the bike already.ÔÇØ

Misano ÔÇô Qualifying Practice 2 & Superpole.
Saturday, 11 June 2011.
Weather conditions: Sunny in the morning, rain in the afternoon.
Temperature: Air: 21 ÔÇô 24 ??C, Track: 26 ÔÇô 31 ??C
Number of riders participating: 23 from 13 teams
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1:35.609 min
Fastest lap Superpole 3: Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) 1:55.197 min
Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a pretty satisfying Superpole session at Misano (ITA). Works riders, Leon Haslam (GBR) and Troy Corser (AUS) will both start the sixth round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship from the second row. Leon finished the wet Superpole session in fifth. Troy, who is still suffering from heavy bruising after the highsider he had yesterday, qualified sixth. After all the Practice and Qualifying sessions had been dry, heavy rain showers started just minutes before the deciding Superpole session. Many riders crashed in the opening minutes on the greasy track.

Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 1:36.377 min (P6) / Fastest lap FP: 1:36.588 min (P8) / Fastest lap Superpole 3: 1:56.034 min (P5)
ÔÇ£I am relatively happy with the overall result today. It was tough out there with a lot of riders crashing and making mistakes. I must admit I struggled through Superpole 1 and Superpole 2, but the team worked hard and we made some positive changes, which meant I was able to set good times in Superpole 3. In the final session I was following Carlos Checa - in places I was faster and in others he was faster. On the last flying lap I went into turn four and sadly crashed out. We ended up fifth on the grid. It would have been nice to be on the front row but we should be happy with our result. We have a few issues that seem to be affecting us in both wet and dry conditions, but hopefully we can sort them for the races tomorrow.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 1:36.656 min (P13) / Fastest lap FP: 1:36.433 min (P6) / Fastest lap Superpole 3: 1:56.285 min (P6)
ÔÇ£This morning I did not feel too bad on the bike, as the swelling had gone down and my lap times were quite good. Then I had a small slide and fell on my hip again. It became inflamed again and I struggled all day with it. Changing direction was difficult, especially in the wet, where you have to get off the bike a bit more so as not to lose the front. So I just tried to avoid another crash and to fall on my hip again. Also we did not have fantastic rear grip in the wet, so I had a couple of little slides. Because of this I played it safe. But I think my hip should be alright tomorrow. For the races I would prefer it to be dry, because then you donÔÇÖt have to worry too much about crashing. In the wet it is so slippery out there. I am just happy I made it to Superpole 3 and finished sixth, as that was better than I expected. If we can get a good start tomorrow we can make it to the front, and our lap times are not too bad.ÔÇØ

Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£On the whole, this session was absolutely positive. It was a real strong effort by Troy. With the rain it is always a kind of lottery. There was absolutely no grip out there. We did a good job qualifying on the second row with Leon and Troy. For the races we expect dry conditions. And from the second row a lot is possible.ÔÇ£

Troy Corser's official website:

Despite his heavy fall yesterday, when he suffered a cracked rib and severe bruising to his right hip, neck and right elbow,Troy somehow managed to get on his bike today and take part in practice, qualifying and Superpole. Every lap was a painful experience, but Troy even managed to fight his way into Superpole 3 and, as a reward, he will now start from the second row of the grid. Carlos Checa (Ducati) had dominated in the dry, but Briton Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) took Superpole in the wet, with a time of 1:55.197. Checa took second, with Jakub Smrz (Ducati) third and Marco Melandri (Yamaha) fourth. The wet Superpole followed a highly intense morning timed session, which saw the top sixteen separated by just 1.1 seconds and an afternoon untimed session with ten riders all within a second of each other. Troy - 6th, 1:56.285 After the crash yesterday, I felt really sore and I honestly didnÔÇÖt know if IÔÇÖd even be able to get on a bike today. The doctor passed me fit enough to ride and so I went out in the morning timed session with the idea just to do a few laps and seed how it went. And actually I felt pretty good on the bike! Well that is until I had another little tip-off and of course I landed on my right hip again causing the swelling to increase. It feels like a big bump on my hip and I was pretty sore again. IÔÇÖve got a small crack in one rib, but luckily itÔÇÖs round to the side and back and itÔÇÖs not really a problem. Fortunately my chest and back protectors did a good job, though I could certainly feel something going on this afternoon every time my chest moved across the tank. At the moment, IÔÇÖm finding it difficult changing direction - especially in the wet. Because in the wet I use my knees to touch the tarmac for feel and also to keep the bike upright. But, because of the swelling in my hip area I was having difficulty getting my knee down. So I tried to take it steadily in the wet this afternoon because I didnÔÇÖt want another crash. This track does not have good grip in the wet and it feels very greasy and slippery. ItÔÇÖs easy to lock the bike up and crash, so I would prefer if itÔÇÖs dry tomorrow. I was happy enough to just get into Superpole today, let alone make final Superpole. Yesterday evening, I didnÔÇÖt know if IÔÇÖd be riding today and now IÔÇÖve ended sixth quickest and a place on the second row of the grid, so IÔÇÖm pleased about that. The first turn is not far from the start line, so itÔÇÖs important to make good starts and be in the front group. If you donÔÇÖt do that, you get held up in the first section and after that itÔÇÖs impossible to make up the ground. IÔÇÖm hoping for a good nightÔÇÖs sleep and then IÔÇÖm sure IÔÇÖll feel more refreshed and in better shape for the races. See ya Troy

Race 2 - Crashes red flagged Race 2 - I will be back with the results shortly.

Troy Corser did not start Race 2

Leon Haslam started the second race in the same fashion as the first. He led laps 1 and 2 then surrendered the lead to a hard charging Checa and then P2 to Biaggi. That pair broke away from the field opening up almost a six second lead in 5 laps.

With 16 laps remaing Marco Melandri had reeled in Haslam to take P3 from him, but he crashed two laps latter. Aprilia's Camier crashed on the same lap. The result was a red flag.

When the riders headed into the pits to await the restart Checa had roughly a o.934 lead on Biaggi and a 8.313 second lead over Haslam, now in P3. Badovini had moved to P10 and Lanzi was shown in P18.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Misano ÔÇô Races

troycorser.com

The injury that Troy suffered when he was highsided , prevented Troy from scoring any points at Misano today. Although he started race one, it was only a couple of laps before he realised that he could not finish the race and so he pulled in rather than stay out and get in anybodyÔÇÖs way. From then, it was obvious that race two was a no-goer and so Troy was forced to sit and watch the action instead of being part of it. Series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) consolidated his hold on the championship with another double victory today - his third of the season. Max Biaggi (Aprilia) was runner-up in both races, with Marco Melandri (Yamaha) third in race one and Noriyuki Haga (Aprilia) third in race two. Troy - Race 1: DNF, Race 2: DNS ItÔÇÖs never good when you crash early on in a weekend and although my hip didnÔÇÖt feel too bad yesterday, it felt a lot worse today when I woke up. But, I thought IÔÇÖd give it a go and so I started race one. Very soon, it became evident that the injury was preventing full movement of my right leg and that stopped me from being able to get my knee down. This track has many changes of direction and there was not enough strength in the hip to allow me to move the bike around anywhere near normal. I knew I was cooked after a few laps and managed to complete five before pulling in. If I had stayed out, I couldÔÇÖve crashed and done myself more damage or worse - I could have caused somebody else to crash. Before the highside, weÔÇÖd tried some different settings on the engine braking and traction control. WeÔÇÖd made some improvements for sure and itÔÇÖs a shame that I didnÔÇÖt get a chance to put them into practice. Now I need some rest and I need to get some movement back into my hip so that IÔÇÖm ready for Aragon next weekend. I feel pretty confident that IÔÇÖm going to be in much better shape come next weekend. Wish me luck Troy

Every form of racing seems to be seeking relevance. SBK defines and redefines what the street/racing bike is. MotoGP is on the verge of a major change to make it more exciting and relevant. Formula 1 is in a heated debate on how to make that form of motorsport greener and more relevant to fans and businesses. The FIM and others are exploring electric series rules for the future. All are striving to find this relevance for a variety of reasons and yet miss one glaring and growing problem: rider safety.

The more I cover road racing the more interested I become in the myriad of developments for chassis, engines, electronics and more. However, with the exception of improving helmet standards the gear racers wear has not really changed all that much from when I began following motorcycle racing in the 60s. Yes, yes readers can point to all sorts of incremental important improvements in quality, armour and gear in general, yet we see an ever growing set of top level road racers suffering broken collar bones along with other shoulder injuries. How many of these are a direct result of that very important piece of safety gear ÔÇô the helmet ÔÇô becoming the irresistible force that overcomes the immoveable object called the collarbone?

In 2002 I suffered my first real motorcycle accident injuries after 40 years. In a low speed accident I broke my collarbone and ribs. In the process of investigating the accident it quickly became clear my gear had protected me from much more serious injuries or possibly death. It also became abundantly clear that my helmet while saving my brain (okay no wise cracks from the bleachers please) was clearly the culprit in breaking my collarbone.

BMW and others have developed neck collars that help prevent this secondary injury. These have been in development for years yet they remain clumsy and therefore sit unused in manufacturer and dealer inventories.

If helmet and racing suit manufacturers use racing as a vehicle to promote their products to us at what point will they work with professional racers, the FIM and racing teams to develop a truly workable solution for this setting and in turn the street.

Broken ____ such as Toseland and Rea have suffered may well be unavoidable in some of the disastrous high sides we see on race weekends. Yet all to many top level races are experiencing broken collarbones and related injuries that to this riders feeble eye appear could be diminished by development along these lines.

Getting fans to appear to the box office at the race track and on the tube are big drivers of this quest for relevance. Perhaps a bit of time protecting the stars of the sport from injury would go a long way to putting fans in the seats. In the process those developments will be very relevant to riders and dealer pocket books as they trickle down to the street; giving us reason to be thankful for racing developments beyond hyper handling and power capabilities.

BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team – Misano - Race
Positive result at Misano weekend: Ayrton Badovini he touched on the podium in race 2, confirming steady growth. Lorenzo Lanzi, in his first race, the BMW has collected points in both races. Lorenzo Zanetti in the Superstock race, was third.

The BMW Motorrad Italy Wsb Team went close to the podium thanks to the good performance of Ayrton Badovini in race 2, is a stroke during the attack that led him to commit Nori Haga, who rallied the third position. In race 1, Ayrton is once again managed to finish in the top ten.

Ayrton said: "I am satisfied and happy this time. We have always had weak starts today, making it a perfect, I fought for the podium. I would, however, preferred to finish fifth, because so I wouldn't have had no regrets, though, to get to a meter in the Superbike World Championship, is still a great personal revenge and a source of satisfaction for the team. Between the two departures of race 2 my team has been phenomenal, worked fine on the bike and the second part of the bike race 2 was even better. I must confess that I did not expect a general growth and team # mine # so fast, in fact, I thought I could be in the form no earlier than the last three races. "

Lorenzo Lanzi at his first outing with the BMW-replacing James Toseland-took confidence with the bike at every turn, in the race, despite the prolonged period of stop, to go for two points, sometimes even the performance of the two races.

In the Superstock, Lorenzo Zanetti scored another podium, finishing in third place ahead of Sylvain Barrier. After three races, Lorenzo is third in the ranking of the FIM Cup at 22 points from first place, followed by Sylvain.

Lorenzo said: "despite the track at Misano is not favorable for us track and the rain of Saturday there has improved compared to last Friday, I'm glad the placement. Third place, in optics, is, in fact, a good result. Looking ahead, Aragon and a new track for everyone, while Brno and ' my favourite track. I want to thank the team that worked very well for the whole weekend! "

Serafino Foti, Sports Director of BMW Motorrad Italy Superbike Team said: "Weekend very positive, since there is very few escaped the podium for thousandths and for an embarked taken by Ayrton on the last curve, but I want to congratulate him because he was very good all weekend. I hope that is the beginning of a long career. The team as usual was fantastic and I compliment also with them. Positive debut Lorenzo Lanzi, despite his enforced inactivity. I am convinced that from the next race will take some good satisfaction. In the Superstock knew that here at Misano for us would be a difficult race and both Lorenzo which Sylvian were good to limit the damage. Now get two pretty favorable to our bikes. This, however, remains a very difficult and we must not let up until the very end ".

Andrea Buzzoni, Director of BMW Motorrad Italy said: "it's a piece of dream begins to come true, thanks to an extraordinary group of guys who works with great skill, enthusiasm and understanding. The same understanding that brought us together with Daniele Casolari, Serafino Foti and Dino Acocella to build, in a very short time, the Superbike project. Ayrton has morally taken the podium, demonstrating and confirming, even in the Superbike World Championship, his talent and his lucidity in the conduct of the race. Fourth place sizable rewards a remarkable growth of Ayrton at which my enthusiasm and of course congratulations.Excellent performance by the boys of the Superstock Teams who have obtained the best result on the worst in the League, showing great skill and professionalism that will serve for the remainder of the Championship.
