Silverstone ÔÇô Qualifying Practice 2 & Superpole.
Saturday, 30 July 2011.
Weather conditions: Overcast in the morning, later scattered clouds.
Temperature: Air: 16 ÔÇô 20 ??C, Track: 22 ÔÇô 34 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22 from 12 teams
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: John Hopkins (Samsung Crescent Racing) 2:05.058 min
Fastest lap Superpole 3: John Hopkins (Samsung Crescent Racing) 2:04.041 min
BMW Motorrad Motorsport riders, Leon Haslam (GBR and Troy Corser (AUS), will start
tomorrowÔÇÖs World Superbike races in Silverstone (GBR) from the third and fifth rows
respectively. While Troy was not able to qualify for Superpole Qualifying, and so will go into
SundayÔÇÖs races from position 17, Leon missed the third and final Superpole session by only
21 thousandths of a second. He will start from ninth.
Ayrton Badovini (ITA) from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team will start on his BMW S 1000
RR from tenth. His team mate, James Toseland (GBR), qualified 14th.
Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:05.640 min (P8) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.053 min (P5) /
Fastest lap Superpole 2: 2:05.091 min (P9)
ÔÇ£I was able to post good lap times on race tyres, but sadly when we changed to the qualifying
tyre the extra grip caused a few issues. We should be in good shape come the races
tomorrow, as we are happy with the times we are able to set on race tyres. ItÔÇÖs a shame
because if I had remained on these tyres, I think I could have made it through to Superpole 3.
But we will line up in ninth tomorrow, which isnÔÇÖt bad considering my recent starting positions.
I am feeling pretty confident, so letÔÇÖs see what happens. The BMW is good off the line so letÔÇÖs
hope for a good start.ÔÇØ
Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:06.304 min (P17) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.473 min (P9)
ÔÇ£TodayÔÇÖs result is disappointing. We have definitely fixed a few things we struggled with
yesterday. Still, chattering was our biggest issue today. We think the reasons were a
combination from engine brake and set up. We changed the engine brake and it helped a bit,
but the chattering came back with a grippy tyre. I was not too bad on my long runs, as the bike
was quite stable. We know what we have to do for tomorrowÔÇÖs warm up.ÔÇØ
Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£Leon unfortunately struggled with the qualifying tyre. Although starting from the third row, I
am confident he will show a good performance tomorrow. His lap times on race tyres were
consistently good. On TroyÔÇÖs side we were not able to find a good chassis set-up, but we keep
working hard on this. I hope we will have a good solution for tomorrowÔÇÖs warm-up and races.ÔÇØ
TroyCorser.com
Troy had a day to forget, missing out on getting into Superpole, and will now have a mountain to climb if he is to get any kind of good results out of tomorrowÔÇÖs two 18-lap races. All the things he and the team tried didnÔÇÖt work out as intended and there was a bit of confusion regarding a new new bike which didnÔÇÖt help matters. Wild Card John Hopkins (Suzuki) won Superpole today, with a lap of 2:04.041, just two tenths of a second ahead of Eugene Laverty (Yamaha). Third was Leon Camier (Aprilia), with series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) filling the final front row grid spot in fourth. Troy - 17th, 2:06.304 ItÔÇÖs been a disappointing and a frustrating day and it hasnÔÇÖt worked out the way we thought. We got a bit caught out at the end of free practice this afternoon and that didnÔÇÖt help either. Also, I made a little mistake and that probably cost me the fraction of a second that wouldÔÇÖve got me into Superpole. We managed to get rid of the chatter on one bike, but not the other. We had a new bike and it didnÔÇÖt feel the same as my other bike and maybe we spent too much time trying to get it to work when we shouldÔÇÖve just parked it. ThatÔÇÖs what Leon did to his new bike and thatÔÇÖs why he finished higher up than me. We have a problem when we use the bike on qualifiers and have not found a good solution yet. I have ridden many bikes and no other bike has behaved in this way so we are still working on finding out whatÔÇÖs going on and then making improvements. My arm is a bit sore today, but I think thereÔÇÖs probably a bit of friction at the end of the plate inside. ItÔÇÖs not too bad and it will not affect me in the race. I made the best practice starts of the season today, so hopefully I can do that in the races and fight for a top ten place. Wish me luck. Troy
BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - SILVERSTONE ÔÇô SUPERPOLE
A fall in Superpole did not stop Ayrton Badovini from making a third row, tenth place start. Pleased to be back, James Toseland
qualified for Superpole and reached 14th. Zanetti and Barrier, respectively fourth and fifth in Superstock, will start from the first and
second rows.
It has been an emotion filled day for the BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team which had both riders qualifying for Superpole.
Ayrton Badovini fell in the early stages of Superpole 1 but was able to pit and get back out immediately on a second bike, from
which he then qualified for Superpole 2. The second run proved to be very closely fought and Ayrton, in pain, reached the third row,
with the tenth fastest time, missing Superpole 3 by 45 thousands of a second.
"I am satisfiedÔÇØ Ayrton said after the Superpole ÔÇô ÔÇ£because regardless of the Superpole result, the fall meant that I was ÔÇÿforcedÔÇÖ to
ride the second bike and I liked it. We have thus identified a new set-up solution for the race. Of course, we see these choices as
dependent on temperature. In comparison with my competitors we are relaxed and we will be ready for tomorrow. "
James Toseland, on his return, reached Superpole and his time allows him to start from the fourth row. His physical condition is still
limiting his performance and the British rider has conserved some of his energy for tomorrow's races.
James said: "It has been nice to get back on track and although I didnÔÇÖt get beyond Superpole 1 IÔÇÖm still in perfect shape. During
qualifying I could have pushed harder but it takes it out on my wrist and that saps my energy. Overall, my time is not far from the top
but I have to work to bridge the gap. Over the next events we will continue to develop the bike and I'm excited to finally be able to
contribute to the team".
The BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock Team has Lorenzo Zanetti on the front row (fourth fastest time), a position that will allow
the Brescia rider to get a good start and be with the leaders. Sylvain Barrier, however, starts from just behind on the second row in
fifth place.
Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of qualifying the day commented: "Today
we suffered because we struggled a little to find the right set-up for both riders. In the end we managed to find something in free
practice before Superpole, especially for Ayrton. His fall in Superpole 1 was unfortunate, because track time is limited. After the shock
of the fall, Ayrton reacted very well in getting back on the bike and making Superpole 2. We are quite confident for the race, although
as a precaution we have sent Ayrton to hospital for checks as he sustained a hard impact on his chest from the tank and we donÔÇÖt
want complications. James reached Superpole but still hasnÔÇÖt found the right bike balance. We will try to make further changes
tomorrow to solve the problem. I expected more from the Superstock final qualifying session, even though we pay much less on race
pace. It promises to be another hard fought race like the others in the championship. "
