Formula One Ferrari question 'double-points' plan
Ferrari want Formula 1 to reconsider controversial plans to introduce double points for the final race of the season.

FWIW: All rules are silly and give an advantage, intentionally or not, to a select group of competitors. The double point rule is sillier than most. The only clear advantage gained by the rule goes to Formula One Management the reigning champion of snagging F1 fan dollars/euros/yen. In theory it will put fans in stands and in front of screens to watch the final race thus increasing FOM's revenue. Teams may gain an incremental share in revenue based on the terms of the Concord Agreement.

Fans gain little beyond the potential prolonged but false high by waiting for the championship to be decided. Artificially bending the the rules and season outcomes will not make the final race of the season as exciting as Hamilton/McLaren and Massa/Ferrari taking the decision down to the final lap of the final race. The excitement of that race was built over a season of racing. Yes in the end Hamilton snatched championship victory from Massa's race victory by points gained; however the points gained were on as level a track as F1 offers and by the skill of drivers and power of cars; not by a silly one race points anomaly.

Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel have dominated F1 for several years; however, Ferrari remains first among equals when it comes to the business decisions and rule making. The BBC article has Di Montemezemolo raising enough questions to create the wiggle room to allow an F1 car make a pass and return some sense back to the points system. Di Montemezemolo should not be seen as a white night. He will act in what he sees as Ferrari's best interests.

What ever color knight he is, most likely crimson, this fan hopes he picks up the lance being first among equals affords him and slays this silly paper dragon rule.

    Christmas Day, 2013

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

Babes in Toyland / March of the Wooden Soldiers
This has been a Christmas BR&TMR (and Morning Reads before this) tradition for many years. I hope you enjoy it.

Another tradition is for this thread to take a break between Christmas and New Years. The next days will be spent on the road checking in with the Pit Crew.

This year the break will be an indefinite one. 2014 should be a busy and exciting year for me with many new opportunities, challenges and adventures on the horizon demanding more and more time. Too many fun things pulling me in too many directions. Something has to give and unfortunately it is this thread. I will continue to participate on the forum, follow the recall scene and post when I find something pertinent to this group and in general be my normal nuisance self time permitting.

For over seven years I have had great fun putting together these news aggregation threads. In that time you have taken almost three million views of the the various posts. Thank you for looking in.

Wow, thanks so much for the time you've put in. This has been a daily read for me and is unique that I know of as an aggregation of motorcycle and racing news. I understand that it's likely a large burden and that you have to move on. Perhaps there's a worth person out there that can pick it up and move it along.

    Mika -

Sunny roads ahead for your in 2014! We appreciate the great deal of work it took to put these up everyday.

A thought, if I might. Any chances that you might do a reduced version of the critical elements of the BRMR for publication in the ON? You inputs on the forum were obviously much more timely than a monthly mag, but your insight would still be appreciated every month in the ON.

    Thanks again...

I am not certain about the best thread but thank you for the comment. It is not fooling around or a joke. Well I am having fun working hard at a couple other interests of mine right now. In general some other things need my attention right now.

    Thank you.

I have written for the magazine. Maybe at some point but it is not really calling me.

I am curious what are the core elements people miss and would like back if I were to take up a reduced version of the thread? No promises but please feel free to PM me with comments and ideas.

Way above my pay grade...wait we don't get paid around we?

BMW and the 2014 World SBK campaign has me intrigued.

Transitional rule changes going into effect, no doubt, played a big part in the BMW decision to shelve the full factory team effort. However, that does not mean BMW does not have a big hand in the 2014 series.

In 2013 the factory effort was split. Engine development went to Munich while chassis development for the S1000RR went to the teams and their chassis people. This was the same model that had been used with World Endurance Championship effort. Therefore, we should not have been surprised when BMW made their WSBK decision.

The BMW Motorrad team may be history but the Roundel will be on the track. I don't expect a championship. I will be very happy with a few podiums. BMW Italia along with several privateer efforts will campaign the S1000RR. The Italia effort perhaps has the greatest possibility for podiums in that group. Alstare will be campaigning their Bimota BB3 powered by the BMW 1000 effort.

Under the rule option the RR powered crowd has chosen to follow engine development is effectively frozen (at least for the purposes of this post). Teams are allowed to make chassis improvement/developments; just like the full factory teams. This has my total attention for two reasons.

First I have to thank WSBK, BMW and all the teams for running a full season test of my hypothesis. In short form since about the fourth race of the V1 in 2009 I have thought the S1000RR engine over matched the chassis. For all of the improvements that were made with the V1 electronics and chassis followed by the V2 I never have felt the S1000RR in race form was a balanced bike.

If you dig into the stats for 2013 Melandri and Davies were looking more like German versions of Max Biaggi than anything else. Go really fast in the straight line - survive the turns as best you may - then go really fast in the straights again. Melandri would regularly run the fastest trap speeds while dropping down in lap times.

My thesis is if the engine development is frozen and chassis development is the focus maybe the balance will happen. The only problem may be the human factor in the engine - chassis -pilot trinity that makes up a WSBK effort.

The second part has me waiting for September 30th and BMW's pre Intermot press event. The night before the show opens the manufacturers wine and dine the press and give them a peek behind the curtain at their new models. Colgone is the home show for BMW. Will they introduce a V3 RR as the flag ship for a sporting line up that may well include models below 500cc.

I fully expect BMW Italia to be on the grid. 2015 WSBK has all of the teams running under the same rules. I am hoping they will be campaigning a S1000RRv3 beginning with Phillip Island and that it will be coming to a dealer near you in early 2015.

Until then I have a term paper to finish.

Pass the mustard and UP THE REVOLUTION!
