If you have a dialup connection, turning off images should enable threads to download much faster and you'll be able to participate much easier on a slow connection. So how do you do this?
At the upper right of the forum window, you will see a row of buttons. Click on the left-most one labeled user cp, which stands for user control panel.
On the next screen, click on Edit Options.
On the following screen, under Thread View Options, click the No radio button on the far right on the line that says Show image attachments and code in Posts?[/b].

Then click the Submit Modifications button at the bottom of the screen, and yer done.
You can also turn off avatars in the same way, if you like. We kinda like avatars, but at least you get a choice.
