I have an old 1981 R65 and would like to bring back the shine and luster of the engine without having to disassemble it to do so. The head fins need a little brightening. Is there anything out there that can do it? I've tried using some steel wool but I just can't get down far enough with my hands to do it.
Suggestions helpful...
Thanks:dunno

To begin with, it takes lots of elbow grease. Best get a 45 gallon drum of it.

I did mine with a thin tool called a "Fibre Stick" used by gals shops when installing windshields. About 10 inche long piece of plastic material, about 1/4 inch thick. Wrapped some thin plastic abrasive similar to a "Sctoch Brite" pad around it. Used a metal polish called Autosol. You should be able to get the Autosol metal polish from your local auto parts supply. Worked at it for quite some time till it got pretty black with deposits, then polished up with soft cloth in the same manner. Came up very nice. Did the whole engine and carbs with that stuff, now looks almost new.

You can continue to polish to the point of almost looking like chrome, but that might be a bit too much.
