Need some oilhead help on the R1100RT/RS series. More curious than anything. Here it goes.
Somewhere in the history of the R1100RS/RT production, BMW made a running change to the exhaust pipe. One version had two tabs at the front of the collector box that attached to the center stand mounting brackets. The other version did not have these tabs and no connection to the center stand. There is no change in the part number for the exhaust. The same part number is used through out the model history. There is a change in the design of the center stand and the attaching hardware somewhere around the 1996 model of the R1100RS, but not the R1100RT.
It looks like the earlier version of the exhaust did not have the tabs and the later version did. It also appears that either exhaust will fit any year of the R1100RT or R1100RS, the difference is whether or not the center stand is attached. And I am correct about these two points or do I have it backwards?
The second question is why was the change made? Was it about the exhaust or did it have more to do with the center stand? And finally, do the tabs affect the mounting of the exhaust? If I have to replace an exhaust, does it matter if I have the tabs or not?
I have an early GS with a RT pipe that does have the tabs. My early RS does not have the tabs. Really just curious how it all came about. Any help is appreciated!
