ESA... Can you feel it?

I recently had my bike serviced at a local BMW dealership and they uploaded some new firmware into the computer that controls the ESA. According to the indicators on the dash, it seems to be working as I can change the settings with no problem. Here's my question. When I change the suspension at a standstill should I feel the bike "move" even slightly up/down as I change the settings?

You should feel a change in rear height only when adjusting the preload. In a few seconds after changing, the dash icon should flash and the rear of the bike will move up or down. The damping settings do not affect the height so you won't feel any static change.

If the preload icon changes but doesn't subsequently flash, you have a problem.

Tom, I did change the preload (one helmet, one helmet + luggage, two helmets) and felt the bike move slowly up and down. I never noticed it before but I got on the bike this morning with no gear on and there was a definite shift in height. I guess before I expected something a little quicker that I would feel but it is just subtle. Thanks for the feedback.

Glad I could be of help. Your characterization of the change as "subtle" may be a bit of an understatement - I never realized the back end moved until mine got locked into the 2 up position about a year ago.

I changed my ESA from 1-up to 1-up w/luggage last weekend. In neutral, engine running. I saw the indicator flash the 1-up + a few times as it changed, felt the height change a little and it stiffened a little.

My '07's ESA works and has always worked, straight out of the box. The cruise, however, did not. :mad
