BMW as in British Motor Works

Has anyone ever heard of a manufacturer in the 1940's or 50's from England called British Motor Works that built motorcycles. A friend of mine swears he knew someone who had one.

No.

There was British Motor Corporation - BMC - that manufactured automobiles under the Austin, MG, Morris, AUstin-Healy and a few other names. It was the roll-up of the Austin and Neufield companies in the early 50s.

Your friend is probably confusing something with BSA - Birmingham Small Arms.

Lulz.

Your friend probably knew somebody who had an actual BMW and assumed or misunderstood that it stood for British Motor Works. I actually met a guy once who insisted that old British bikes were junk and that the R90/6 I was riding was a British bike made by British Motor Works. I'm fairly sure he actually didn't think I knew what I was talking about when I told him my bike was actually made in Germany by a German company.

But, oh well .... it takes all kinds!

I get that "A Lot". Even when I first got my 87 K75, from one of my brothers (both of my brothers are HD guys). He also pointed out I should get a Harley, something about staying true to my American roots. OK, my last name is Gillitzer. It's not just German, it's Bavarian..........:dunno
