K75 bell housing

I have a 1988 K75s. There is a hole at the bottom of the bell housing just aft of were it meats the engine and just ahead of the center stand. The hole is about 3/8" diameter and it does not appear to be threaded. The manual shows the hole in one of the pictures, but it does not discuss what it is used for. I suspect it is some kind of breather hole, but surly it should house an element of some kind. I am afraid that dust and water will get into the clutch housing if it remains open as it is. Any ideas as to what this hole is for?

Sure - it's the clutch weep hole. It's to let oil out of the clutch housing if a seal leaks. I'm actually surprised you didn't mention it being damp with oil on an '88.

Not to worry about stuff getting in - the grime produced by the clutch disk is much worse than anything that would get in that hole unless you submerged the bike for a while.. it's a forgeddaboutit unless stuff starts drooling out of it.
