Shameless Trolling - For Touring Tips

What do the following things have in common? The answer is based on knowledge rather than observation, although observation has a lot to do with it.

Furnace . . Fly
Microscope . . Sculptor
Easel . . . Goldfish
Compass . . Toucan
River . . . Air Pump

Look at the word that has been put in bold - observation.

Geez - for a group that dug out the pneumatic subway under NYC. :brow

Answer: TheyÔÇÖre all lesser-known constellations in the heavens.

Did not know that Julia Child was a spy for the OSS until visiting an exhibit about her life at the newly re-opened museum of American History.

Today's Trivia Question:
What did famed chef Julia Child cook up for the U.S. Navy during World War II, when she was working as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services?

Answer: A shark repellent that kept sharks from bumping into and setting off underwater explosives planted by the Navy to disable German U-boats. The repellent, developed by Child and her OSS team, was used to coat the explosives.

Tuesday, March 03 - A capital trivia question

Name the capital of each of these U.S. states. Then take a letter from the same position in each word and, with rearranging, read the letters down to get other capital. Be careful! No grammatical error.

Oregon
California
Texas
Florida
New York

Good Luck!

ANSWER:
Salem
Sacramento
Austin
Tallahassee
Albany

Take the last letter of each state capital to get other capital: MONEY which is capital. Yeah it was tricky. :hungover

Will be back soon with trivia for March 4th.

An easy one

Here's an easy one after yesterday skunked the audience:

What two words, formed from different arrangements of the same six letters, can be used to complete this sentence?

After a hard-fought _________________, the military commander swallowed an aspirin ______________.
:scratch

Too easy, but battle / tablet.

What do these five things have in common? Don't get tired trying to figure it out! There is a clue in that sentence.

RATIONAL
COLLAR
SKIRTS

OK this was a tough one!

And the answer is:
NIFTY ... Thrifty
RATIONAL ... National
COLLAR ... Dikkar
SKIRTS ... Hertz
DAVIS ... Avis

Each rhymes with the name of a major car rental company: Thrifty, National, Dollar, Hertz, and Avis

Well done. Looks like I have to kick this up a notch. Be back shortly!

GIVE ME A . . .
For each pair of U.S. colleges or universities below, add the same letter once to each pare to make a common word out of each school. There’s no need to rearrange letters. The added letter will be different from pair to pair. And if you are really cooking with high test there is more than one answer for #s 2 & 3 although the words are obscure. :wave

1. EMORY and COE
2. MAINE and BAKER
3. HANOVER and LEE
4. BARNARD and SMITH

1. EMORY and COE
2. MAINE and BAKER
3. HANOVER and LEE
4. BARNARD and SMITH

1. MEMORY and COME, M
2. MARINE and BARKER, R
3. HANGOVER and GLEE, G and HANDOVER and LEED, D
4. BARNYARD and SMITHY, Y (eas"y" for me)

Couldn't come up with a quick one to add to Maine.

Tip of Hat
tipofhat3.gif

to Bobs98

1. M: memory and come
2. R: marine and baker (L would make the obscure maline and balker)
3. G: hangover and glee (D would make the obscure handover and leed)
4. barnyard and smithy

OK No more Mr. Nice Guy - Will be back with trivia to keep google busy.

Come To An Understanding

COME TO AN UNDERSTANDING
The words in Group A share a common trait and are in a certain order. After finding the answer for column A which word in Group B also has that trait and follows next? Devilishly tricky this puzzle. But the answer is right in front of you. Next trivia question is mathematical.

Group A . . . . . . . . . . .Group B
INDEFENSIBLE . . . . . . .PARSNIP
AFGHANISTAN . . . . . . .THOUGHTFUL
COUGHING . . . . . . . . .CORNERSTONE
CALMNESS . . . . . . . . .VIEWPOINT
MONOPOLY . . . . . . . . . EXPRESSWAY
hmmmmm.gif

ANSWER: Each word contains a sequence of three consecutive letters of the alphabet (e.g. LMN in calmness). These sequences are in alphabetical order (def, fgh, etc.) so the next word in order is CORNERSTONE. (UNDERSTANDING in the title would also work.)
